If you sometimes give the players too much creative freedom, it can quickly degenerate. Proof of this is what is currently happening on the famous Garry’s Mod.
His video game is full of nostalgic Nazism and this developer can’t take it anymore. That’s the famous Garry’s Mod. For the record, this game on Steam is a graphical toolkit that used to be a build mod for half-life 2, created by Garry Newman in December 2004. Since 2006 it is a full game with thousands of active players. It’s very simple, the sandbox title allows all the madness with in particular the possibility of creating content related to the Second World War. So far so good, but very quickly Server began to develop a morbid fascination for National Socialism with role-playing games that bordered on the legal (explicit advertising for the Third Reich).
Far too many Nazis for game creator Garry’s Mod to taste
It’s quite explanatory in a lengthy tweet that Garry’s Mod creator Garry Newman wanted to set things straight. In particular, he is concerned about the presence of RP players on certain servers who appear to be much more than just players.
It seems that some of them really like Nazis outside of the game too..
If someone runs a WW2 RPG server and receives donations, and this bunch of normal hardcore gamers really like Nazi stuff… That’s a problem.
Of course we don’t want to ban all WWII themed games, but we do want to get rid of Nazi celebrations.
In particular, the man explains that part of the game has been in a gray area for a while and that it’s time to do something. Without banning the WWII mods that are having a lot of success within the community. Newman also insists that any action he takes should not be viewed as a loss of liberty or indiscriminately attacking players.
It’s not mind control.
He just wants to make his game a safer and less illegal area. He also states that he shut down problematic servers.
racism on the line
The problem isn’t so much using Nazi soldier skins for RP (which in itself can be considered problematic), but rather performing RP actions while demonstrating one’s fascination with the Nazi regime. For example, on Reddit dedicated to specific servers, there is a whole gallery of screenshots with evocative and particularly dubious captions like “Two SA officers mistreat a homeless man” or “Bürger was caught pleading with German soldiers against the curfewemands”. And you only have to take a look at YouTube to see that even some gamers are reciting the SS Oath of Allegiance to Adolf Hitler perfectly and in order. In short, it was high time to crack down on this type of content.
