Hogwarts Legacy is going through the roof right now. After just two weeks, over 12 million copies of the game have already been sold. All the more surprising is the recent announcement that no DLCs are planned. But apparently that’s not entirely true.
With 12 million copies and already over 850 million dollars in sales, we hardly have to argue that Hogwarts Legacy is a huge success. Given the success, one can also safely assume that Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche also rely on long-term support for the brand.
It was all the more astonishing that game director Alan Tew from Avalanche Software, the game’s developer, said a few days ago that there were no current plans for expansions of the game. Can this really be true? Such a success and then no replenishment?
Recent tweets from Avalanche’s Lead StoryTech Engineer Eric Brown put Tew’s statement into perspective and suggest that there are no concrete DLC plans yet because the game hasn’t been released on all planned platforms yet. After all, the versions for PS4 and Xbox One are still available in April, and the switch version will follow in July.
“A better way to understand Alan’s answer to the DLC question is to remember that we’ve only released half of our SKUs so far,” wrote Brown. “There are people out there who haven’t gotten their hands on the game and we don’t want to take advantage of those people.
Sounds plausible in any case, especially since the team certainly still has a lot to do with optimizing Hogwarts Legacy for the “old” consoles in such a way that it doesn’t become a performance disaster. That being said, we’re now so used to DLC being announced before or at the launch of a game that it’s completely ignored that later expansion announcements were perfectly normal not so long ago. So: wait, everything will be fine.
