Hope for more graphics cards through a billion-dollar deal

Nvidia is apparently working flat out to ensure the supply of the graphics cards from the RTX 4000 series expected for the end of 2022. At least that’s what a report on the Chinese website says Mydrivers.com emerged. Accordingly, Nvidia is already paying huge sums to the Taiwanese contract manufacturer TSMC in order to secure production capacities and wafers for the 5-nanometer production.

Multi-Billion Dollar Deal: Specifically, Nvidia is said to have transferred 1.64 billion US dollars to TSMC in the third quarter of 2021 (Q3 2021). That is the equivalent of around 1.45 billion dollars. In the first quarter of 2022 (Q1 2022) a further 1.79 billion US dollars, or around 1.58 billion dollars, would be added. A total of a whopping 6.9 billion US dollars (6.1 billion dollars) and thus much more than last year go to the Taiwanese.

Does that really mean more graphics cards?

First it should be said that it is not clear by how much larger the amount that flows to TSMC is compared to the same period of the previous year. It is also unclear whether other manufacturers, such as Apple or AMD, are not doing the same. AMD could lose out here because the company is financially much worse off than Nvidia, but this does not apply to Apple or other manufacturers.

the green Bird catches the worm: However, if Nvidia succeeds in securing potential capacities from other manufacturers or, better still, from other branches of industry, that could actually mean in absolute terms that there will be more graphics cards on the market in the end.

Much more important, however, is the overall capacity that TSMC can provide in 5-nanometer production. Is the company sufficiently prepared for the recently significantly increased demand for semiconductors? And can the various suppliers even comply with this? Most recently, a report made the rounds that the ABF substrates that are important for the production of CPUs and GPUs seem to be in short supply for years to come.

When does the price go down, how do we play tomorrow?

In the podcast linked above, GameStar editors Michael Graf, Nils Raettig and Alexander Köpf discuss when the prices for graphics cards will fall again and how we will generally play in the future.

What do you all mean? Is RTX 4000 a real hope for more graphics cards or are you tired of such messages? Feel free to write it in the comments!
