It’s basically an open secret that Guerrilla Games is working on a multiplayer offshoot of the Horizon series. New job advertisements now confirm this with interesting details.
For some time now, reports have been buzzing through the internet that a multiplayer title in the Horizon universe is on Guerrilla Games’ to-do list. This also fits in with Sony’s ambitions to launch a stack of live service games in the coming years.
A series of new job postings on the developers’ website now confirm that this appears to be the case, and there are clear indications of a cooperatively playable title. Could there be some kind of Destiny with machine dinosaurs?
However. In any case, the call for a lead quest designer for an unannounced project says that you want to expand the Horizon universe for a multiplayer audience.
The tender for the Senior Character Combat Designer mentions multiple playable characters as well as “…unique abilities that are exciting to execute, offer tactical opportunities, and create cooperative opportunities for multiple player characters”.
A designer for the machine dinosaurs is also on the list and cooperative combat is also mentioned here. However, the whole thing should obviously not remain without a story and could take place in an open game world, because the position of Principal Writer mentions: “Our authors strive to push the boundaries of dramatic storytelling in open world games. We want, “That players will be drawn into our quests and characters, that they’ll enjoy dialogue that sizzles, and that they’ll enjoy our stories long after they’ve put down the controller.”
In summary, everything points to a cooperative open-world title with several playable characters and a bunch of new machine opponents. It remains to be seen whether it will stay that way, an official announcement is still pending. But it sounds very much like a recipe we know from The Division 2, Destiny 2 or similar titles. Until then, we can take solace in the upcoming expansion, Horizon: Forbidden West – Burning Shores, due out on April 19, 2023 for PS5.
The development of a multiplayer offshoot has meanwhile been officially confirmed by Guerrilla Games on Twitter, which a new internal team is taking care of. At the same time, they want to continue developing new solo adventures by Aloy.
