“Demonologist” and “Phasmaphobia,” both titles in the ghost hunting game genre, have already used your microphone to send shivers down your spine; »Bureau of Contacts« goes even one step further.

The horror game, which will be available in June 2024 Early Access starts, not only uses generative AI, but according to the developers uses a neural network to kill the player.

You take on the role of an agent from the Bureau of Paranormal Phenomena and do exactly what the name suggests: hunt ghosts.

With up to three other players, your task in co-op is to locate poltergeists and ghosts and exorcise them. However, it won’t be that easy for you.

As in Phasmophobia and Demonologist, you can speak to the ghost in question and it will react to you – and adapt its behavior accordingly. Thus, the monster, and in the broadest sense the player, writes the story of the game.

Additionally, maps are procedurally generated from handcrafted blocks, so each new round feels fresh.

What does it mean to use a neural network?

Developer MiroWin says it is the first game to train a neural network to kill.

what is neural network?

A neural network is an artificial intelligence model consisting of interconnected neurons used for pattern recognition and prediction.

The neural network controls the ghost’s behavior, which changes depending on actions by the players or words spoken to the ghost. MiroWin writes himself:

The neural network analyzes the behavior of players and acts as an invisible scriptwriter, determining the course of the gaming session and influencing the variety of outcomes.

You can see how this plays out in the end at “Bureau of Contacts” from June onwards Early Access find out for yourself.

A neural network has been trained to kill for the first time and is unleashed on you in “Bureau of Contacts”. What do you think about generative AI in video games? Is this a way to keep the experience fresh for as long as possible? Or do you think everything should come from human hands? Write your opinion in the comments.
