EEK3 marked from Haunted PS1, a community dedicated to showcasing indie horror games with styles dating back to the PS1 era. Get ready for lots of low poly models and jagged aliasing, because that’s exactly what this stream is ready to show off.
Calls for the showcase, announced in March via YouTube, run through May 31, and can now be showcased through the game in just a few hours. The most exciting thing about this neat niche display case is that there are no leaks. We don’t really know what games will be shown, which has us gearing up for Friday night’s indie.
Last year’s EEK3 showcase was truly incredible, and the handful of titles on display may already be familiar to Haunted PS1 fans since they were part of the 2021 Haunted PS1 Demo Disc a few months ago. We haven’t seen a demo disc for 2022 yet, but that’s another thing to look forward to, hopefully we’ll be able to sample some of the games shown at this year’s EEK3. However, if you’re not familiar, you might be wondering what the heck is a Haunted PS1 demo disc?
Well, Haunted PS1 – the community that hosts EEK3 – is also the guy behind the Haunted PS1 Demo Disc. First of all, it’s not a disc and doesn’t have any PS1 games. In fact, the Demo Disc is a collection of downloadable indie horror game demos and playable experiences. It’s also completely free!
Even if you’re not a huge horror fan, there’s a fascinating non-horror indie game or two to try; the 2021 disc is actually exclusive to the super colorful platformer Toree 3D, which has even received a sequel since then!
If waiting for the EEK3 reveal right now has you craving your way into a new indie game, you can still check out the 2021 Haunted PS1 demo disc. Some of the top picks on last year’s disc had to be Dying MMO Pain, which featured a somewhat chaotic “The World’s Ending” scene that I won’t spoil, and An Outcry, a pixel-art-style narrative horror game that I really enjoyed.
It’s also worth mentioning some of the highlights from the EEK3 2021 showcase. winds of brazdia, which is still in development, has been announced. This particular game follows the snow in Brazildia, and if you thought The Legend of Zelda would make a good horror game, both games are perfect for you. I should also point out that Brasilia Winds was inspired by Super Mario 64’s wing cap!
And Derelikt, who stands out from the list. When a creature is spotted in orbit around Saturn, your character needs to investigate. It’s particularly inspired by Alien Resurrection and Doom 3 and cosmic horror, and started as a research project on “PS1 looks” and thankfully grew into the game it is today. It’s still in development, but hopefully, if Developer’s Twitter There’s something to pass, and we’ll see more of Derelikt soon.
Last but not least, this wouldn’t be a standalone horror showcase that harks back to the good old days of horror without a game directly inspired by Silent Hill. Meet the Hollowsk 1999 3D. Hollowsk is located in another lo-fi town so shrouded in fog that you might think it’s Silent Hill at first glance. In this familiar town, you’re actually an outsider who just wants to deliver… but of course, something goes wrong. The demo is now available on Steam!
If what was shown last year is any different, EEK3 2022 will be just as exciting. But get ready for lots of industrial noise and creepy screams!
The EEK3 showcase itself will kick off today, Friday the 26th, starting at 3pm PST/5pm CST/6pm ET/11pm BST and 12am UTC. You’ll be able to listen to the thrilling event via YouTube on Haunted PS1.
