“House of the Dragon” takes place 172 years before “Game of Thrones” and shows some important historical events from Westeros’ history. So important, in fact, that we have already been spoiled in “Game of Thrones”.
“Game of Thrones” has already anticipated one of the biggest twists in “House of the Dragon” in the third season. The following is about this massive spoiler, so do not read on if you want to continue watching the series without any background knowledge.
Joffrey Baratheon tells Margaery Tyrell about Rhaenyra Targaryen’s fate
In the fourth episode of the third season of GoT, thanks to Joffrey Baratheon, we learn what fate will befall Rhaenyra Targaryen. In the episode, Joffrey walks through the Sept with his future queen Margaery Tyrell. They both stop when the king points out Rhaenyra’s final resting place and tells of the cruel death of the Targaryen princess.
Rhaenyra Targaryen was murdered by her brother, or rather his dragon. He ate her while her son had to watch.

In the third episode of “House of the Dragon” we also meet Rhaenyra’s cold-blooded murderer for the first time: Aegon II Targaryen. The son of Alicent Hightower and King Viserys I Targaryen. In the fight for the throne and rule over Westeros, the two siblings fight each other, which will end fatally for Rhaenyra.
Rhaenyra’s son Aegon III has to watch as his uncle has his mother devoured by the dragon Sunfire.
But the series still has a long way to go before it gets to that point. The Dance of Dragons – the Targaryen War between Rhaenyra and Aegon II – is only just beginning in Season 2. Many battles still have to be fought before the half-siblings meet for the last time.
Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” starts on June 16, 2024 on HBO and HBO Max. One day later you can watch it in Germany on the channel Sky Atlantic or the streaming service Wow.
