House of the Dragon: Does a crucial character already die at the end of the 5th episode?

The fifth episode of “House of the Dragon” picks up the pace properly. After many conflicts were inflamed in the first episodes, they now break out.

The royal wedding between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon aims to reunite the divided houses. But as is usual with Westerosi weddings, there are some bloody tragedies. Could one of the main characters of the series die already?

King Viserys’ fate

For several episodes now, we’ve been following the King’s deteriorating health. Initially only plagued by abrasions, after the 5th episode of “House of the Dragon” one has the impression that Viserys is rotting from the inside. Already several fingers had to be amputated due to the laziness of the flesh. The rest of his body doesn’t look any better, and the Masters regularly have to put him through a leech procedure.

Coughing up blood and visibly bruised, Viserys literally torments himself through the wedding arrangement. After Ser Kriston Kraut beats Laenor Valeryon’s lover to death at the festivities, the newlyweds are left alone in the hall with septon and parents and a few witnesses to get married.

And then it happens, Viserys loses consciousness and falls over. The final shot of the episode is the pool of blood left over from Gottfrid Lonmund’s murder, which a rat is licking. Viserys’ fate may not be known until the next episode, but can he really be dead?

This is extremely unlikely. The scene serves only to show the dramatic deterioration in Viserys’ health. Viserys’ death will leave a power vacuum and the ensuing inheritance disputes will only resolve the dragon’s dance.

According to the book Fire and Blood, which the series follows very closely at times, at least as far as the chronological order of events is concerned, Viserys still has a few years of reign ahead of him. His falling over at the wedding is probably intended to show his ever-worsening condition and the associated loss of control. Now Viserys can no longer hide his illness.

Between episode 5 and episode 6 we can also expect a huge time jump in “House of the Dragon”. Rhaenyra and Alicent will be cast by new actresses (Olivia Cooke and Emma D’Arcy) and we’ll see Viserys again. The only question that remains is for how long.
