Although we only see his brother’s tragic journey, House Stark and its infamous Lord Cregan are already being teased for the second season of “House of the Dragon”. What awaits us when we return to Winterfell?

The north lives

The Starks’ only appearance in “House of the Dragon” so far has been by Lord Rickon Stark in the first episode swearing an oath on Rhaenyra as heir to Viserys I Targaryen. Several decades pass after this and Lord Rickon is succeeded by his son Cregan Stark as Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North.

It is to this place that Jacaerys Velaryon sets out to remind him and the North of the oath of their former master and enlist them as supporters of Rhaenyras’ claim to the throne. Meanwhile, Lord Cregan has his own problems with the onset of winter and wildling raids.

In addition, while he is considered a loyal and “true” Stark, he is also quick-tempered and grumpy. It will be exciting to see how Jacaerys convinces this winter lord to join Queen Rhaenyra’s cause in the far south.

Here’s what we know about Lord Cregan Stark

Cregan Stark is Ned Stark’s great-great-great-grandfather. The head of House Stark in “Game of Thrones” is a direct descendant of Cregan and his third wife, Lynara. So there is a strong connection between both series that lead the Starks as loyal, faithful and special characters.

During the events of the Dance of the Dragons in “House of the Dragon”, Cregan is in his 20s, about the same age as Jacaerys. Which, Rhaenyra notes, could be of some benefit in the forthcoming negotiations between the two.

Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North, Cregan Stark oversees the largest, if not the most prosperous or populous, territory of the Seven Kingdoms. He is said to have been a skilled swordsman, loyal and formidable and strong. For Rhaenyra, his support, and with him the swords of thousands of northmen, would be a tremendous asset.

Will Cregan Stark support Rhaenyras’ cause?

We know from the books that Jacaerys will be successful in his petition to Lord Cregan. The two young men get along well and are said to spend a lot of time together training or hunting. This forges strong bonds between them, and Cregan pledges to support Jacaerys and Rhaenyras’ claim to the Iron Throne.

This alliance is to be known as the “Pact of Ice and Fire”. It is also recorded that Jacaerys, although already engaged to his stepsister Rhaena, agreed to marry Cregan’s firstborn daughter. It is not yet possible to say whether this will be mentioned in the second season “House of the Dragon” and exactly what happens, or whether Jacaerys will find other means to convince Lord Cregan.

The Stark that ends the war

However, Lord Cregan Stark’s later intervention in the bloody Targaryen conflict is said to be decisive for the war. Together with his vassals and men, he is to shift the balance of power in favor of the “black queen” Rhaenyra.

Among the Greens’ allies, the Northmen, especially the group of “old winter wolves”, are said to cause numerous casualties and fear and terror. After the war and its turmoil, Cregan Stark should also ensure that law and order returns to King’s Landing.

He is destined to become, albeit briefly, one of the key advisors to Rhaenyras’ son, King Aegon III, serving as his hand. After all traitors are either sent to the Wall or beheaded in “Wolf’s Hour”, Cregan retreats. As a true Stark, he has no interest in the political power games in King’s Landing.

Now that Season 1 of House of the Dragon is over, it’s time to get some easter eggs and speculation about Season 2 of the HBO adaptation of Fire and Blood.
