“House of the Dragon” season 3 doesn’t start for another two years. After the nasty cliffhanger finale, we’ll tell you what happens in the new episodes.
While many Westeros fans were expecting a battle in the season finale of “House of the Dragon” Season 2, there was basically only a long teaser for what awaits us in “House of the Dragon” Season 3. We don’t feel like waiting that long, so we went through the book “Fire and Blood” again to find out what happens next.
The season finale sets up at least four key events that must be shown in Season 3. We’ll tell you which battles and conquests are on the list for the upcoming episodes, but of course be warned about possible spoilers from the book!
The Battle of the Gurgel
Into which sea battle does Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) go?
In one of the last moments in “House of the Dragon” Season 2, we see Corlys Velaryon setting sail with his sea fleet. Sailing towards them is the fleet of the Triarchy under the command of Lohar (Abigail Thorn), who was able to win Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall) over to Aemond’s cause in the final episode of Season 2.
Both fleets are sailing towards the so-called Gurgle, a strait between Dragonstone, Rhaenyra’s stronghold, and the Free Cities. While Lannister and Lohar are on their way back to Westeros from the Free Cities, Rhaenyra’s children are also on their way to the Free Cities.
We have already seen how the young children set out from the Vale with the dragon eggs. On their way to the free cities, they encounter the naval power of the Triarchy. While Viserys is captured, Aegon III is able to escape and warn his mother.
A massive naval battle ensues, with both sides suffering heavy losses. Ultimately, the Velaryon fleet succeeds in repelling the Triarchs, forcing them to retreat.
The Battle of the Throat results in the death of Jacaerys Velaryon (Harry Collett), who also fights in the battle with his dragon Vermax. Vermax also dies in the brutal battle.
The Battle of the Gods Eye
A dragon fight takes place over the roofs of Harrenhal
Another battle that will most likely take place in the third season is the Battle of the Gods’ Eye. This takes place above the rooftops of Harrenhal. It is the duel that fans have been eagerly awaiting between Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and Daemon (Matt Smith) and their dragons Vhagar and Caraxes.
With Daemon currently still in Harrenhal and Aemond heading to Harrenhal with Kriston’s army, the battle over the Gods’ Eye is one that will likely occur relatively early, or at least in the mid-season finale of season three.
During the battle over the Gods’ Eye, all four of the protagonists mentioned above, Aemond, Daemon, Vhagar and Caraxes, are killed.
The Conquest of King’s Landing
Alicent orchestrates the capture of her own city
In the season finale, Alicent decides to sail to Dragonstone and seek out Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy). She wants to enable her to peacefully conquer the capital. While Aemond will fight with Vhagar and Kriston’s army in the Riverlands, King’s Landing would be unguarded and with Alicent and Helaena as regents, she wants to open the gates to Rhaenyra and ensure a peaceful takeover.
At first, Rhaenyra isn’t sure if she can trust Alicent. As the conversation progresses, however, she realizes that Alicent’s words are sincere. She simply wants to live a life of peace and make that possible for her daughter.
All my life, I have striven to serve my house and the kingdom. None of that matters anymore. We are pushed aside. Or hated.
Alicent Hightower (Season 2, Episode 7)
After Alicent realizes that she has neither emotional support from her children nor any political purpose in King’s Landing, she decides to escape the life she lives in the capital. Alicent also asks Rhaenyra to spare Aegon’s (Tom Glynn-Carney) life.
Rhaenyra makes it clear to Alicent that she can only end the Dance of Dragons if she beheads Aegon, thereby defeating her opponent in front of the people and taking her throne. Alicent sees this and leaves. Will she keep her word?
In the book, Rhaenyra actually takes King’s Landing while the battle rages elsewhere. She succeeds in taking the city, but the fact that this happens because of a deal between Alicent and Rhaenyra is an invention of the series.
Since the books say that King’s Landing was quite easy to conquer, it can be assumed that Alicent will keep her word. However, by that time, Aegon has already fled the city, so Rhaenyra still has an opponent who is challenging her for the crown.
The Conquest of Dragonstone
Aegon’s escape leads him to Rhaenyra’s fortress
The status quo as of the season finale of the second season of “House of the Dragon” is that Rhaenyra’s fortress is Dragonstone and King’s Landing is officially in Aegon’s hands since he is on the run.
We know from the book that Aegon seizes the opportunity and, in Rhaenyra’s absence while she takes King’s Landing, conquers her fortress, Dragonstone, instead.
There he quickly succeeds in getting the dissatisfied men on his side. In addition, Aegon’s dragon Sunfyre makes his comeback in this battle. Although Aegon believes his dragon to be dead, Sunfyre survived the Battle of Crow’s Rest and will fight alongside Aegon to take over Dragonstone.
After Rhaenyra conquers King’s Landing, she returns to Dragonstone. Unaware that her fortress has fallen to the enemy in her absence, she is in for a rude awakening. Aegon captures her and feeds her to Sunfire. This event will probably be saved for the final, fourth season.
House of the Dragon Quiz: Are you real dragon riders?
Which novel series is the story of “House of the Dragon” based on?
That’s it for now with new “House of the Dragon” episodes. The third season of the fantasy series has already been confirmed, but the production costs of this high-budget series suggest that we will have to wait another two years before the new episodes await us in the new releases program from Sky and Wow.
