“House of the Dragon” makes no secret of the fact that King Viserys is not well. The Iron Throne is troubling the Tagaryen leader – both mentally and physically. Because not only is he under great pressure to find an heir or now an heiress and to keep the peace in the kingdom, the throne also hurts the king.

Viserys constantly cuts himself on the sharp-edged ruler’s seat, which was made of swords. But every cut, no matter how small, has devastating consequences: Viserys obviously has a wound-healing disorder that causes the cuts to become inflamed and the surrounding flesh to rot.

Paddy Considine reveals!

In an interview with the US magazine Entertainment Weekly for the podcast “West of Westeros”, Viserys actor Paddy Considine says that the king suffers from a form of leprosy.

He suffers from a form of leprosy. His body decays, his bones decay. He’s not really old. He’s still a young man in there. Unfortunately, he just has this thing that has taken over his body. It becomes a metaphor for being king and the stress and strain that comes with it and what it does to you physically and mentally.

Nowadays, the disease, now more commonly called Hansen’s disease, is curable. In Viserys’ time, not much can be done about it except tend the wounds.

The disease as a symbol

The disease symbolizes the weakness that he shows as ruler. Basically, he sits out every conflict instead of acting.

That the throne is slowly killing him could be taken as a sign that it is time for a new ruler. We know that the great war of inheritance called “Dance of the Dragons” is coming. This is triggered by Viserys’ death and his previous decisions. Whatever the king suffers from, it will cause his end.
