House of the Dragon, a high-flying first season
The first stage in the story of the extravagant Targaryen family, which began on August 22nd in France, came to a breathtaking end last Monday after a total of ten episodes. Now, as we patiently await Season 2, its promises, and the chaos that brews, it’s easier to offer our verdict on this first foray into the Game of Thrones spin-off.. The new show has a long way to go to match the intensity of some of the original series’ most defining moments, but the spin-off series is on the right track. On the spectator side, everyone will have retained a handful of distinctive and suspenseful passages in their own way, such as George RR Martin’s universe is full of.
In developing these ten episodes, the showrunners and HBO crews obviously relied on the novel fire and blood. But that didn’t stop them from deviating from the main plot written by the author, or adapting or not very specific scenes, to surprise both those who had already scoured the pages of the book when it came out and those who are discovering this prequel of game of Thrones. As the episodes progressed, parts of the script or events were repressed, such as the long-unexplained fate of Corlys Velaryon, which should have been uncovered in a different way at first.
A deleted scene to leave more confusion about this character’s fate
Without going into more detail, Corlys Velaryon, also known as the sea serpent, made a big comeback in episode 10. It couldn’t be otherwise for the one who represents a formidable ally in battle, as Princess Rhaenyra risks launching the future of the series, namely the famous Dance of the Dragons. If this character’s comeback was highly anticipated, we should have heard from him on the airing of Episode 8, whose original script included a poignant scene of his struggle to disable the Triarchy and regain control of the Stone Staircase. It’s his interpreter, Steve Toussaint, who best speaks to us about this finally cut scene.
(laughs) I don’t know. That’s really a question for showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik. Originally the plan was to keep the character if he is injured. I had a conversation with Geeta Vasant Patel, the director of Episode 8. She explained to me this wonderful scenario where Corlys falls into the sea and is rescued by his men. It was really a great scene… They couldn’t do it after all. So we did what you saw. — Steve Toussaint, interpreter of Corlys Velaryon in House of the Dragon
Since the tragic event that the Velaryons experienced at the end of Episode 7, Corlys’ fate has been on hold, raising the question of Lamarck’s successor, particularly at the beginning of Episode 8. Rather than reveal Corlys’ condition to viewers, the showrunners felt it wiser to leave this question open so viewers could share the concerns of other characters miles from the Battle of the Stone Steps.. A less powerful and graphic scene, of course, but a fear that only made the reunion more pleasant!
