Fans are waiting for new “House of the Dragon” episodes. Season 3, however, is still a while away. We have all the information about the upcoming season!
The “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” is a huge success for US broadcaster HBO and it should come as no surprise to most fans that “House of the Dragon” season 3 is a sure thing. However, after the cliffhanger finale of the second season, new episodes are desperately needed!
It is not yet known how many episodes the third season will have. While the first season consisted of 10 episodes, season 2 was shortened to 8 episodes and we honestly assume that “House of the Dragon” season 3 will follow this trend.
When does “House of the Dragon” season 3 start?
Filming has not started yet, so we shouldn’t expect new episodes before 2026. The spin-off series “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” has also been confirmed for 2025. It is unlikely that HBO will release two Westeros series in the same year.
The series will probably alternate, so that each series can take two years to produce, but fans can still return to the fantastic world every year. “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” takes place around 70 years after “House of the Dragon”.
What happens in “House of the Dragon” season 3?
“House of the Dragon” is based on the book “Fire and Blood” by “Game of Thrones” author George RR Martin. Unlike the GoT book, which has several volumes, “Fire and Blood” is a chronicle that takes us through the Targaryen dynasty.
While there are some core events, the show’s creators are given a lot of creative freedom. It’s not clear which events will be filmed in Season 3. However, we have a few guesses.
The Battle of the Gurgel
In the final episode of the second season, it was already shown how the Triarchy travels to Westeros and the Throat with Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall). The Throat is a strait between the Free Cities and Dragonstone, Rhaenyra’s fortress. The Triarchs’ sea fleet will meet Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) and his sea fleet at the Throat.
A massive naval battle ensues, with both sides suffering heavy losses. Ultimately, the Velaryon fleet succeeds in repelling the Triarchs, forcing them to retreat. Warning, there is a massive book spoiler in the next paragraph!
The Battle of the Throat results in the death of Jacaerys Velaryon (Harry Collett), who also fights in the battle with his dragon Vermax. Vermax also dies in the brutal battle.
The Battle of the Gods Eye
Another battle that will most likely take place in the third season is the Battle of the Gods’ Eye. This takes place above the rooftops of Harrenhal. It is the duel that fans have been eagerly awaiting between Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and Daemon (Matt Smith) and their dragons Vhagar and Caraxes.
With Daemond currently still in Harrenhal and Aemond heading to Harrenhal with Kriston’s army, the battle over the Gods’ Eye is one that will likely occur relatively early, or at least in the mid-season finale of season three.
House of the Dragon: Where is Otto Hohenturm?
Who captured the scheming Targaryen advisor?
“House of the Dragon” Season 2 only shows us a few scenes with Otto Hohenturm. In the season finale we see that he is locked up. But who is holding him captive?
Warning, spoilers: During the battle over the Gods Eye, all four of the aforementioned protagonists, Aemond, Daemon, Vhagar and Caraxes, are killed. While Daemon and Aemond fight each other, fans can also look forward to two more conquests:
The Conquests of King’s Landing and Dragonstone
The status quo as of the season finale of the second HotD season is that Rhaenyra’s fortress is Dragonstone and King’s Landing is in Aegon’s hands, except that Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) is on the run from the capital.
As planned by Alicent (Olivia Cooke), Rhaenyra will fly to King’s Landing during the battle over the Gods’ Eye and take over the city. We know from the book that the people will welcome her with cheers. But Aegon will already be long gone by then – or will he?
We know from the book that Aegon seizes the opportunity and takes Rhaenyra’s fortress, Dragonstone, in her absence. There he quickly succeeds in winning the dissatisfied men over to his side. In addition, Aegon’s dragon Sunfyre makes his comeback in this battle.
Although Aegon believes his dragon to be dead, Sunfyre survived the Battle of Crow’s Rest and will fight alongside Aegon to take over Dragonstone.
Cast of “House of the Dragon” Season 3
With “House of the Dragon” and “Game of Thrones” there is always the question of which roles will make it into the next episode. It often happens that a main character dies out of nowhere and so it is never entirely clear which stars will return in the next season.
However, since some characters survived the second season, the following stars can be expected in “House of the Dragon” season 3:
- Emma D’Arcy also Rhaenyra Targaryen
- Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower
- Matt Smith als Daemon Targaryen
- Rhys Ifans as Otto Hohenturm
