How a publisher works, how it »thinks« – at GameStar we can normally only look at it from the outside. We analyze games and scour business reports in order to derive trends and problems. For example, in our Plus podcast about the Paradox Interactive crisis.
But this time we get first-hand insights: In the GameStar podcast, the owner of a strategy game publisher visits us to talk openly about his worries and successes.
Simon Hellwig co-founded Kalypso Media in 2006, today he is the sole shareholder of the publisher, which you can find among others from Tropico 6, Port Royale 4, Railway Empire, Dungeons 3 as well as – very current – from Disciples: Liberation knows. Kalypso is also working on a new commandos.
Simon talks to Michael Graf about the advantages of being a non-listed publisher, but also about the challenges it poses. Kalypso cannot keep up with the budgets of an Electronic Arts or Take Two.

The company stands between two poles that are becoming more and more extreme: the ever-growing industry giants such as Microsoft and Activision Blizzard on the one hand, and the small, but sometimes very successful indie studios on the other end of the spectrum.
How can you survive as a small strategy game publisher in the shark tank in between? Especially when we think more in the direction of cloud gaming and game subscriptions in the future?
Calypso has some answers to that. It is not for nothing that the publisher has set trends in the past, which Paradox Interactive has even copied. Conversely, calypso can also learn something from paradox.
What exactly? And why is the strategic one, despite all the challenges, better prepared for the future than many others? You can hear it on the podcast!
