Deadpool vs. Wolverine might be a big hit for Marvel Studios, but it’s fair to say that the MCU needs to surprise us a few more times before we can once again claim to be in the ‘good zone.’ Right now, all eyes are on the movies that will be released in 2025, including Daredevil: Resurgence, which is coming to Disney Plus, and it seems like that’s been taking longer to prepare than we thought.

During the last D23 event, Daredevil: Resurgence stars Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil) Vincent D’Onofrio (Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin) spoke with People magazine and revealed some behind-the-scenes events since the Netflix original series was canceled, and despite a surprise call from Marvel bigwig Kevin Feige in 2020, nothing happened a few years later.

“It wasn’t until mid-2020 that we received [President of Marvel Studios] Kevin [Feige] They expressed interest in bringing those characters back… not even back to the show, but just bringing those characters into the MCU,” Cox explained. Keep in mind that Marvel Studios was still figuring out what the MCU would look like after Phase 4 following Avengers: Endgame, so it would make sense that the original plan might have been to bring their characters into an entirely different project, like a Spider-Man movie.

Cox went on to say that he had given up because he hadn’t heard from Marvel Studios in two years: “I had let it go, and occasionally Vincent and I would talk and he’d be like, ‘Oh, they’re going to call. I thought they were going to come to us, but they’re going to call us,’ … and I’d hang up the phone and be like, this guy is crazy! He’s got to let it go. It’s going to be 10 years and he’s still going on. It’s over. It’s over.” This was probably a feeling shared by many members of the Netflix/Marvel shows over the years, but things took a little longer to come together. Finally, a new Daredevil show was confirmed to begin pre-production in 2022, which surprised everyone except perhaps D’Onofrio, who never lost hope and even appeared in Hawkeye, and Cox had a small screen cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

After more than two years and a major remake of the entire franchise, Daredevil: Rebirth is basically a lot like Daredevil Season 4, with Jon Bernthal returning as Frank Castle, aka The Punisher. The leaked D23 trailer for Rebirth can be found online if you look hard enough, and it looks both original and solid, and judging by how Daredevil and the Kingpin have fared in previous MCU series like She-Hulk and Echoes, I’m certainly excited to see what’s next for both characters in their own, more adult shows.
