In 2016, Amplitude Studios was acquired by SEGA, and this shared journey now ends. As the game company behind Humankind announced, they will now operate as an independent studio again.
Amplitude Studios is probably best known for the global strategy title Humankind, but the tower defense roguelike title Endless Dungeon also won over some fans last year. The French studio was founded in 2011 by former Ubisoft employees Romain de Waubert de Genlis and Mathieu Girard.

Eight years ago, Amplitude was acquired by SEGA and now that partnership is coming to an end. The studio wants to act as an indie game company again. The leadership will be taken over by unspecified founding members, but it can be assumed that Mathieu Girard and Romain de Waubert de Genlis will wear this hat again.
In the blog post, Amplitude is important to emphasize that there is no bad blood with SEGA. They parted on good terms and wish the current ex-parent company only the best for all future projects.
Romain de Waubert de Genlies has this to say about the newly gained independence: “Our studio is backed by strong and meaningful franchises and our team is committed to developing the best games possible. With our extensive experience in strategy game development and two exciting titles, currently in the works, we are confident that we can deliver an outstanding experience to players. This decision allows us to be more agile in our approach as we continue to shape the vision that has been ours from the start us to cross borders and be closer than ever to our community.”
If you have any concerns about Humankind, they seem to be unfounded. A fresh patch is currently in development, and the studio wants to explain exactly what it contains in January 2025.
