The saving throw for the Borderlands series

And what does the international gaming press say? Before the release, it was not foreseeable where Tiny Tina’s adventure would fit into all the Borderlands parts. Now the individual ratings are gradually coming in and it turns out: the offshoot is done better than Borderlands 3?

at Metacritic So far (as of March 24th, 2022) Tiny Tina has an aggregated score of 55 reviews 80 points. at Opencritic goes down one point, so this is where the title comes up 79 counters. What doesn’t look particularly impressive at first glance is nevertheless interesting, because the aforementioned Borderlands 3 is clearly within striking distance (81 points Metacritic / 80 points Opencritic).

What do the international tests say?

The table gives you a rough overview of the general mood around Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. But what do the test reports say in detail? Which aspects of the game get a lot of praise, which ones get more criticism? Let’s take a look together.

What is praised? You don’t have to have a first name of Sherlock to realize that the highlights of the game are above all the humour, the fantasy game world and its shrill inhabitants.

Andrew Reiner from Game Informer awarded a proud 95 points and can hardly get out of the song of praise:

Cheerful and fun from start to finish, Wonderlands offers a rewarding adventure filled with quirky characters, imaginative bosses, and a consistent sense of control over one’s character. […] As someone who has played Dungeons & Dragons a lot, I admired the number of times Wonderlands reminded me to roll a 20-sided die with friends. It is a love letter to spontaneous creativity and to friends enjoying each other’s presence in an imaginary world.

Dayna Eileen vom is a bit more settled, but still very positive CGMagazine. She also enjoys the characters and the dialogues, but the usual very action-packed gameplay has also hit the mark with her:

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands brings a mystical world to life coupled with great dialogue and an outstanding cast. All this coupled with the action-packed gameplay results in a must-play game created by Gearbox Software and 2K Games.

Man, all that reading makes your eyes heavy. Time for a short break. Fancy some gameplay? This video shows you a whopping 20 minutes from the game:

What is criticized? Even if the temperamental Tiny Tina will not like to hear it: yes, the fun title also has weaknesses. Some criticize or at least note that behind the colorful fantasy facade there is still a Borderlands game with its focus on loot shooter gameplay. The game world could have offered a little more playful added value, which we also criticized in our test.

Donovan Erskine von Shacknews also refers to the similarities to the classic Borderlands titles and therefore warns all players who have not been able to do anything with the series so far:

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is quite a fun spin on the Borderlands formula, but it’s still clearly a Borderlands game. Fans of the series are sure to enjoy the new spin-off, but please don’t expect this to be the one title that finally grabs you if you haven’t been a fan of the franchise before. Either way, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands does enough to earn a place among the better entries of the Borderlands games.

Darryn Bonthuys von also blows the same horn Gamespotwho sees the similarity to the Borderlands games as a major weakness:

As a spin-off, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands doesn’t reinvent the Borderlands wheel with its shift towards fantasy. Instead, it explores familiar territory that repeats the best and worst aspects of the formula and never ventures outside of the comfort zone. This results in a game with solid first-person shooter action and a capable multi-class system to create an interesting Destiny Charm. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands follows the same technical and narrative path as Borderlands 3, creating a chapter in the franchise that’s fun but forgettable.
