Gaming News Hyenas: Is SEGA’s New FPS a Battle Royale?
At its launch, Hyenas, SEGA’s next hit, presented itself as a multiplayer first-person shooter that borrowed heavily from Apex Legends. However, the game is not a battle royale.
Hyenas is not a Battle Royale!
With the rise of the battle royale genre powered by Call of Duty: Warzone, Fortnite or even Apex Legends, people had the right to wonder if Hyenas, the new production from Creative Assembly, is a battle royale ( or not). Well, you know the answer is no!
While the multiplayer FPS takes a lot from Apex Legends, starting with its artistic direction and locked-down side, Hyenas isn’t a battle royale.
We didn’t want to do a battle royale, but we wanted to take on that idea of creating that unpredictable and chaotic space where players would find new gameplay, new tactics, and ultimately new stories to tell. Charlie Bewsher, creative director at Creative Assembly via IGN
The PvEvP, which offers five teams of three players competing against each other while facing computer-controlled forces, will therefore not have a single map of gigantic size like we can find in Call of Duty: Warzone, but many maps. These are generously dimensioned, i.e. larger than, for example, the cards of a Valorant.
Each freighter is a vast sandbox of intersecting systems, creating endless opportunities for the most experienced team to exploit the environment, security systems, mercenaries, and opposing teams to gain (the) advantage.
Multiple playable heroes like in Apex Legends
Also, while the game isn’t a battle royale, note that it takes the Legends idea from Apex Legends. Indeed, Hyenas will feature several playable heroes with unique abilities. The Pro (The Pro) is a bank robber with a shotgun but also a deployable turret. This character is recognizable among thousands as he wears a mask of Richard Nixon, the 37th President of the United States.
For her part, Commander Wright is a weapon-equipped astronaut who creates foam barricades; Ideal for creating shelters but also for creating platforms to climb on. If we watch the announcement trailer (available above), we can also see a sniper or an acrobat that seems particularly agile. In any case, while Creative Assembly hasn’t detailed all of these characters, we already note that there are three types of heroes:
As a reminder, Hyenas doesn’t have a release date yet. However, the game is expected on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Also note that an alpha will be released. To register for it, just click i.e.
