Lately I’ve been quite disconnected from the world of sports. Enough that I didn’t realize that, after the formidable PGA Tour 2K21, there really wasn’t a 22. I understand that the current global situation has caused that lack, in the same way that I understand that I didn’t know everything what happened because I’m far from being a big fan of the world of golf.
In fact, I think I already commented on it in the analysis of that edition. I am one of those people who only likes games, but I have never seen a golf championship in my life – nor do I have the slightest intention of doing so. However, as a video game, the mechanics that the sport introduces, added to ideas such as those born in this new PGA Tour 2K23I find it a real joy.
PGA Tour 2K23, the return of a young king
Without understanding too well where this curious passion comes from, I love the idea of controlling the wind, the position of the ball, the force of the hit, the irregularity of the ground to end up taking the ball from one place to another taking advantage of a small mound… Many of those things, which a priori are pure mathematical calculation -another thing that I couldn’t like less-, and that I find very interesting here.
Even rewarding, I’d say. Calculating well at what point the ball is going to land and ending up in the miracle of a hole in one is, and I assure you that I am not exaggerating one bit, of the most rewarding things that can be in a sport game. Here there is neither trap nor cardboard. I have calculated myself, I have intuited what the ball could do when it bounced and I have managed to get it from point A to B as if by magic.
However, in the previous PGA Tour there was something that, without particularly bothering me or being an impediment to end up enjoying all that calculation and maneuvering experience, it did annoy me a bit for being far from the accessibility that I was used to with this type of game when I was younger .
So that we understand each other, for that of adapting the mechanics to something more physical, both in the previous PGA Tour As in many other recent golf games, the ball hit is controlled with the analog of the control as if you were moving the club when making the swing. Due to lack of skill, or desire to get serious about controlling it properly, it had caused me the occasional headache.
A golf game tailored to me
PGA Tour 2K23 he sells me Tiger Woods, he sells me a new career mode with a gazillion customization options, he sells me skill trees designed to personalize the experience even more – I really appreciate this one – and yet, within all that mountain of news which really is the most remarkable, what I value most is the inclusion of hitting the ball based on buttons.
With a classic three-point hit to measure strength, stability and precision, hitting the ball and matching all previously made calculations to perfection is no longer tied to how well or poorly you move the joystick. It is, in fact, the best tool that could be put at my disposal to enjoy the game without having to worry about giving the ball a millimeter more to the right and that the whole strategy will go to hell.
Those who want to continue with that other type of hitting can do so, of course, but for those of us who have grown up playing virtual golf in this way, it is quite a gift. Frankly, it has been difficult for me to explain at home what the hell I was doing these last few days playing a game of golf with such enthusiasm when the sport itself annoys me so much.
And it is that despite being miles away from the “cayetanismo“and the waste of water that the real sport inherently brings with it, I could say that I am at the top of virtual golf. I really want to continue checking to what extent in PGA Tour 2K23 They have broken the mold again.
