The world of movies and series is not so different from video games. They have everything from masterpieces and iconic works to others that you wouldn't touch with a stranger's seven-meter stick. Many people go through life without seeing too many of them because they actively avoid them, but others jump into them in search of a good time.
I'm not usually one of the latter, although from time to time I like to embark on an adventure that I'm sure will end in absolute disaster. That was my feeling when I first came across the 2010 film Space Battleship Yamato on Prime Video. It didn't even have the classic background image or video on its file. Even now it has the platform's classic gray-blue background.
See a space battleship killing aliens, but at what cost?
Space Battleship Yamato from 2010 is not the best film, to put it mildly. It has become a little guilty pleasure, because the truth is that I enjoyed watching it. The scene of Yamato emerging from the wasteland that is Earth and flying into space is very crazy.
I didn't care about the movie itself. The story is no different from movies like Starship Troopers or games like Helldivers 2: the aliens threaten us and we end up taking out an excessive weapon to destroy them. In this case, it is the Yamato ship, which is shaped like a World War II battleship and is in fact inspired by the real battleship of the same name.
I don't want to go into reviewing the movie. Suffice it to say that the story was what happened while the Yamato reappeared firing its weapons at the aliens. I didn't even learn the name of the latter! I didn't care because the important thing was the beautiful intergalactic turboship. Can there be anything more epic and brutal than a World War II battleship in the form of a spaceship? The answer is obvious: No!
Although the best of the film was yet to come. I discovered it's a (bad) adaptation of a 50-year-old anime series when searching Google images for my Twitter review. And there I really fell in love with Space Battleship Yamato, also known as Cosmoship Yamato, Space Cruiser Yamato or Estrellas Luminosas. Yamato was also known as Dauntless.
Needless to say, the Japanese animated series looks like an animated series from the 70s, but that didn't stop me from spending almost an hour searching for images and scenes on YouTube. And they were so much better than the movie! I also did some research and it turns out that it was as wonderful as it seems to me today.
Several sources say that Space Battleship Yamato It is one of the most famous series of Japanese animation at the time and inspired many works. And I say more! Hideaki Anno, creator of the series Neon Genesis Evangelionsaid that this was one of his favorite series, since sparked his interest in anime. Last but not least, it was the first anime series/film to win the Seiun Award, a prestigious recognition for science fiction in Japan and ranging from films and series to novels and short stories.
Now I find myself stuck. Finding this animated series through legal channels is not being easy. Nor his four films and even less the rest of the series. At least they are not as easy to find as the 2010 film. I have not thrown in the towel yet, since I have some digital versions and blu-rays and DVDs booked in other countries, Italy mainly. Even a figure of Yamato himself!
I admit that I have also done some research on the other side of the law to find the series and movies that have been released over 50 years. I've even found some fans on Reddit who have a lot of material in their possession and are willing to share it, but first I want to exhaust all legal avenues… especially with Black Friday and Christmas just around the corner.
I don't know where this will take me. I don't even know if I'll end up watching the series and the movies. Yes, I am clear that I would never have undertaken this little adventure or met all the fans if I had not given Space Battleship Yamato a chance from 2010. If you like space battleships and are not afraid to “waste” an hour, take a look at it because Maybe you'll discover something… curious.
