news culture “I don’t care what you do. How dare you?” This Hollywood star lashes out at Tom Cruise after an uncomfortable comparison
Ethan Hunt, one of cinema’s most famous spies, returns to the big screen in Mission Impossible: Dead – Reckoning Part 1. If the character is known for his wits, the actor playing him, Tom Cruise, is not immune to some mistakes.
Looking at the camera, Tom Cruise generally doesn’t go hand in hand! Whether it’s for the Mission Impossible saga or more recently Top Gun Maverick, the actor insists on doing his own stunts. And so much so that in 2013 he gladly accepted the comparison of a journalist and asked whether the shooting of his films could be equated with the deployment of a soldier in Afghanistan
“For the actors to come in and say, ‘Oh, I did SEAL training’ (the US Navy equivalent, ed.) (…) I don’t care what you guys did. When someone says their job is as tough as someone in the military, how dare you? While you sit in a chair and do your makeup for two hours.”
Mark Wahlberg then threw water into his wine by learning that Tom Cruise was at the center of the story. In an interview for the media TMZ, he explains that he has “great respect” for his colleague and for the military as well. Despite this, he remains steadfast and declares that he is “Unfair for someone to make such comments”.
A demanding actor with himself
If the comparison is indeed embarrassing, Tom Cruise’s statement sets the tone for his job and the pressures he’s under. On the set of Mission Impossible 2, actress Thandie Newton – who has appeared in the Westworld series or in the film The Pursuit of Happyness – repeats this. She reveals that Tom Cruise was very demanding on himself, to the point of putting undue pressure on himself. “He takes on a lot” she said over the Vulture media mic. The actor “wasn’t terrible, he was really stressed”, we can read, and obviously that stress was very contagious. Newton claims to have felt some form of “Terror” etc “of uncertainty”.
