Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie: Magic Night Rising (Say that three times fast) There’s a new and completely incomprehensible trailer.

Last year, after years of waiting from fans, the first trailer for the next Puella Magi Madoka Magica movie, Walpurgisnacht Rising, was finally released, and while it looked great, it was certainly just a bunch of shots with no context that didn’t really tell you what the movie was about. The shots were beautiful, mind you, but it’s clear you have to actually watch the movie to understand it. Since then, things have been a bit quiet, save for it being pushed back from Winter 2024 to Winter 2025, which is a pretty big jump, but what’s a few more months after years of waiting? Luckily, a new trailer was released this week… which doesn’t really make anything any clearer, but for hardcore fans, it’s an opportunity for theory building.

Once again the trailer is filled with scenes with almost no context, including one of Madoka and Homura dancing, which I’m sure people will be fine with, but what’s more interesting is the appearance of new characters. There are three in total, a green-haired girl, a light pink/white-haired girl, and an orange-haired girl, all wearing the same school uniforms as Madoka and the other girls. Again, it’s very unclear who they are, and there have been no characters like this in the previous movies, so it’s clear the production team is planning… something.

The original Puella Magi Madoka Magica series aired all the way back in 2011, and only had 12 episodes in total. Since then, a few compilation movies have been released with re-recorded voices and some new animation, and the third movie, Rebellion, features a completely new storyline, but with a bit of a cliffhanger ending. The third movie was released in 2013, so Puella Magi Madoka Magica fans have really been waiting a long time – hopefully there won’t be any more delays.
