Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 was supposed to be a standard peach in my life: an unhealthy vice at first that would moderate into one of those games I return to whenever I have nothing else to play, like Destiny 2Helldivers 2, Remnant 2 and The Division 2. I know, there are too many deuces on my PS5.
I can’t complain. Saber Interactive has delivered. Space Marine 2 It’s exactly what I expected… and more, fortunately or unfortunately. PlayStation 5 says that I have played between 50-60 hours, but it clearly falls far short of reality. I liked it a lot, more than perhaps I reflected in my analysis in an attempt to be restrained.
Space Marine 2 has achieved what seemed impossible for acquaintances, friends and other works: awaken my curiosity about Warhammer 40K. And what started out as just a quick look at the universe to learn about factions and weaponry has turned into an obsession that I’ve abandoned almost everything else for.
By the Emperor, damn it!
The truth is that I have been in the most absolute madness for almost a month with Warhammer 40K. I haven’t spent a single day since the release of Space Marine 2 without spending at least a couple of hours learning something new… and I still haven’t finished scratching the surface.
I have abandoned everything I had pending or in process: resuming the comic series Injustice: Gods Among Us
I’m quite extreme. If something sparks my interest, I consume it until I burn through every last bit of knowledge. The problem of Warhammer 40K is that it is impossible (literally) to catch up in a month. It can’t be done. I don’t even know if I can do it in a year. And I’m only interested in the lore, because I don’t want to play and I better stay away from the paintings because I’m a terrorist. I failed plastic at school. It’s not a joke.
My original idea was to find a very general book with a summary of the history up to the present day, factions, main characters, etc. What is being a glossary or codex. My research and the advice of several people led me to the harsh reality: it does not exist. Not for lack of desire, but because the universe of Warhammer 40K It is so absurdly broad that summarizing it is very complicated. Furthermore, its story continues to develop decades after its beginning.
I wish someone had told me that what I was looking for was the Wikihammer. It is a codex with a lot of astronomical information and very well organized. I think there is no better way to get started than by browsing its digital pages. It didn’t take me long to understand why what I was asking for doesn’t exist: only the Bolter page (official weapon of human troops) is longer than most wikis I’ve ever visited. And so with everything.
Having so much knowledge at your fingertips without someone to guide you is useless. As the Pirelli slogan said: “Power without control is worthless.” The next step in my adventure was to look for references and it didn’t take me too long to find the channel of the content creator called 3Huntle0. Not only does it have a long list of videos of Warhammer 40Kalso has a very pleasant and funny style that has caught me.
The content is quite well organized and offers just what I’m looking for: “All Warhammer 40K Factions”, “Warhammer 40K Timeline”, “The History of the 9 Traitor/Loyalist Primarchs of Warhammer 40K” and a bunch of stories more of characters like Sigismund. They are 40-50 minute videos, although some exceed an hour. Entire nights watching videos, looking at maps and looking at the wiki. Absolute madness.
My mission this month has been clear: take a general look at the Games Workshop universe. Chronology, factions, weaponry and abilities, memorizing names of important characters such as the Primarchs and others such as the Archmage Dominus called Belisarius Cawl of the Aceptus Mechanicus; and understand basic concepts such as Deformity, Omnisshiah and more. And despite having been there for a month, I still have to assimilate certain basics.
The next step of my adventure was to go outside. Last Saturday I woke up early and went to my trusted comic book store in search of reading material. It was a double move because I took advantage of the solo outing to start listening to the highly recommended podcast called The Voice of Horus
Although getting into the podcast was a success, it was not my main goal. I was very clear about what I wanted and I didn’t have to walk around the store much. The first three books of the Horus Heresy: Warlord, False Gods and Galaxy on Fire. I know that many veterans advise against starting to read novels because of this great event, but the truth is that I really liked everything I have heard about it.
And we come to the present day. Now I can officially say that Horus, Lord of War It has given me back my enthusiasm for reading. I have always liked it, but I admit that it has been difficult for me to get into it for a long time due to the enormous number of video games available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch. Without forgetting the hundreds of movies and series on Netflix, Max, Prime Video, Crunchyroll and Disney Plus.
Get started in the lore of Warhammer 40K It’s not being easy. I feel overwhelmed and lost, even though I have all the information available at my fingertips. This universe is absurdly vast. I can only compare it with World of Warcraft y The Lord of the Ringsand yet I believe that they are seas that fall short in comparison to the ocean in which I have been shipwrecked.
