News JVTech I installed a VPN on my iPhone, here’s why
I’ve been using VPNs for a while. First on my computer, then more recently on my smartphone. Talking about it around me, I find that many people don’t fully understand the interest in a VPN, especially on an iPhone since Apple is a well-known brand for protecting user data well. It’s time to explain everything.
Why use a VPN in general?
First, let’s get back to the basics. A VPN, what is it? Almost everyone has heard this acronym before (just open YouTube for that given the world of sponsorships by the major players in this space), but ultimately few really know what it is.
The abbreviation VPN stands for “Virtual Private Network‘, which in Molière’s language can be translated as ‘virtual private network’. Basically, the idea of a VPN is to “bounce” your internet connection to a server located almost anywhere in the world.
This mainly enables 4 things:
- Make yourself anonymous by changing yours Address IP
- Teleworking and Access to Certain Services from foreign countries (such as Netflix)
- To secure your connection, especially at public WiFi hotspots
- access to foreign services and lower prices. Personally, I always go through a VPN to buy train or plane tickets, it avoids artificial price inflation simply because a website notices that my IP address has spent time scrolling.
Other uses are possible, but here’s the gist. Finally, note that the VPN market is extremely competitive and many offer VPNs to differentiate themselves Additional functions if you subscribe. We’re talking about password managers, cloud, antivirus… often things related to them digital hygiene (Your online safety, if you will).
I’m taking these little examples from the VPN I’m most familiar with since I’ve been using it for a while: Nord VPN. It’s world leading, it works perfectly, I wasn’t too worried.

A VPN on an iPhone? What interest?
In general, I value my privacy on the Internet. That’s why I have an iPhoneApple protects my personal data very well. Only on the web does Apple not have absolute power. To avoid ad trackers and other problems, a VPN comes in handy.
Now that you know all the basic uses of a VPN, it’s easier to understand why a high-tech journalist like me might need one.
The first silly example that comes to mind is press trips. I have to travel quite often and I know that very well Wi-Fi at airports, restaurants, and even hotels is unreliable.
In a public WiFi network, it is extremely easy for a hacker to break into transmitted personal information. If I go through a VPN on my iPhone and redirect my connection to a more secure server, I can take advantage of the myriad of public WiFi networks I connect to frequently.
Still as part of my many trips, I am very fond of accessing French algorithms and services from abroad (simple playback on MyTF1 is impossible if you are not in France). In some countries there is even censorship exist on the web and the route through a French server allows them to be bypassed. No VPN, no WhatsApp call from Dubai, no Twitter from Turkey…
With an annual subscription, a VPN often costs cheaper than a Nintendo Switch game. For the peace of mind what it gets me on iphone like pc i think its really worth it.
Having tested them, I don’t particularly recommend free VPN apps for iPhone. The connection is often slow, and since thousands of servers are expensive to maintain, I have absolutely no confidence in the confidentiality of a free service that is not intended to make me a product.
You are free to choose your favourite. As I said above, I personally use the leading Nord VPN I finde the application on the iPhone super well processed and very intuitive (that little world map is a silly idea, but so effective). There are other VPNs that are just as good, such as Surf Shark or Atlas VPN!
