Gaming News “I really think it could work.” Following the Fallout series, Diablo could take the same path
The Prime Video Fallout series is enjoying huge popularity, which is why other big names in the video game industry are starting to have their piece of the pie on the small screen.
Devil in series!?
Given the success of Amazon Prime’s Fallout series, Rod Fergusson, the head of the Diablo franchise at Blizzard, has expressed his opinion that Blizzard’s long-running action role-playing game series would make a great television adaptation. Despite the current buzz around Amazon Prime’s Fallout TV series, Fergusson pointed out that Diablo’s universal themes could be just as compelling on screen. He explained :
Yes, I definitely think this could work. One of the things I really liked about Diablo as an IP is that it has very relatable themes because it’s about the High Heavens versus the Burning Hells and the idea of good versus evil. I think that’s something that translates very well into something like this.
While Diablo isn’t necessarily a story-driven game, the series has a rich lore that stretches back in time Original classic from 1997 and continues in Diablo IVpublished in 2023.
Diablo isn’t just loot!?
For those who don’t know much about Diablo Lore, here’s a synopsis that might convince you about the series adaptation. Over the centuries, Sanctuary, the world in which the action takes place, has been the scene of an eternal battle between good and evil. It all began with the Nephalems, powerful beings created by the Old Gods to protect the world from the Primordial Demons, evil beings from the Void. Over time, the Nephalems split into angels and demons, starting the Sin War, an eternal battle between the forces of Heaven and Hell.
These primal demons include Diablo, Mephisto and Baal, the most powerful and formidable. Their thirst for power and dominance drives them to invade the human world, sowing chaos and destruction. By corrupting humans and manipulating the forces of nature, they constantly threaten the fragile balance of Sanctuary.
Over the centuries, heroes (the players) rise to face the primal demons and their minions. Armed with loot and powers of all kinds, these heroes journey through ravaged lands, facing hordes of demons and saving Sanctuary. In this eternal battle, the angels, led by the archangel of justice Tyraël, play a crucial role. The latter leads the heroes in their fight against evil.
That’s what makes a good dark fantasy series with a group of Dungeon and Dragon style heroes. Nothing has been confirmed so farbut if the series could be as good as recent small screen video game adaptations like Fallout or The Last of Us, the future of cross-media video games would be in good shape.
As a reminder, the Fallout and The Last of Us series are available on the SVOD Prime Video platform.
