Dune 3, directed by Denis Villeneuve, was quickly officially announced by the main players after Dune Part Two, which hit theaters at the end of February 2024, was an expected success. While fans are aware that the sequel is only in the early stages of development, the Canadian director wants to reassure. “Paul Atreides and the Fremen” could return to theaters sooner than expected. The filmmaker even partially reveals the plot of Dune, part three.

Dune 3 by Denis Villeneuve on track

The third film in the Dune film saga is confirmed by the teams working on it a few weeks after the global success of Dune, Part II. Denis Villeneuve’s film work is a critical success (92% positive “press” reviews on Rotten Tomatoes) and a commercial success with $ 714.4 million at the international box office against a budget of 190 million (excluding marketing costs). The start of work on Dune 3 was therefore only a matter of time, even if the first two formed a whole, while the sequel is a separate project. The Canadian filmmaker recently spoke to our colleagues at deadline in addition:

For me it is one and the same being. It’s a film in two parts. It’s done, it’s done. – (Denis Villeneuve)

During this interview, Denis Villeneuve returned to his desire to take a break after the successive releases of Blade Runner 2049 (2017), Dune (2021) and finally Dune, second part (2024). By his own admission, he could return behind the camera much sooner than expected. The latter obviously hasn’t announced a shooting date for Dune 3, but we learn that the writing phase has already begun. The director is supposed to remain silent on such sensitive topics, and that is because he strives to say, “I should remain silent.”

I thought after the second part I would take a break, go back to the forest and stay there for a while to recover. But the forest doesn’t really suit me and I’ll be back behind the camera sooner than I thought. But that’s all I can say.

I’m in the writing phase at the moment. – (Denis Villeneuve)

The Story of Dune, Part Three

Anyone who has read the books knows (more or less) what awaits Paul Atreides and the Fremen people in Dune, part three. By reading the novel The Messiah of Dune, you can glimpse the future. Surely, Denis Villeneuve has taken certain liberties with the source material, but he largely follows and will follow the fate of Lisan al Ghaib. For the director, Dune 3 will “finish Paul’s story.” He then uses the microphone provided by Deadline to weave the main strands of the scenario:

Like Herbert did with Dune: Messiah, I think it would be a great idea to do something completely different. The story takes place approximately 12 years after we left the characters at the end of Part 2. Their journey, their story is different this time, and that’s why I always say: Even though it’s the same world, it’s a new film with new circumstances. – (Denis Villeneuve)

The synopsis of the novel “The Messiah of Dune”: Paul Atreides triumphed over his enemies. In twelve years of holy war, his Fremen conquered the universe. He became Emperor Muad’ Dib. Almost a god as he sees the future. He knows his enemies. He knows when and how they will strike. They will seek to reclaim the spice that grants foreshadowing and perhaps uncover the secret of its power. He can thwart their plans, but can still see further. He knows that all possible futures lead to disaster and is haunted by a vision of his own death… – (Fnac)
