News culture “I want to see what happens” Zack Snyder is willing to break the first rule of Batman at the risk of setting the internet on fire
Since the release of Batman V Superman in 2016, Zack Snyder has caused a real divide among DC Comics fans. Eight years later, he returns to one of the film’s most controversial decisions affecting Batman, which he defends today.
The DCEU ended in theaters last year with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Among the craftsmen who contributed to this magnificent project, Scott Snyder is certainly the best known of all. In addition to kicking off this universe with “Man of Steel,” he also directed two other major films: “Batman v Superman” and “Justice League.”. With this project now complete, the 58-year-old American director returns to certain controversies that his productions have generated.
“Batman can’t kill,” really?
On The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast, Zack Snyder spoke about his relationship with DC Comics fans and all the hate his films have garnered over time. It reached its peak with the release of Batman v Superman in 2016 due to one central point: the more violent vision of Batman, played by Ben Affleck. For many comic fans: Watching the Dark Knight kill his enemies on the big screen was sacrilege which violates the cardinal rule of the superhero, which is that he never kills. But Zack Snyder was interested in exactly the opposite of this central point. On Joe Rogan’s microphone he explains:
People always say, “Batman can’t kill.” So Batman can’t kill, that’s canon. And I say, “Okay, the first thing I want to do when you say that is see what happens.” And they say, “Don’t put him in a situation where he has to kill someone.” I tell them, “It’s like you’re protecting your God in a strange way, isn’t it? You make your God insignificant.”
An almost religious relationship with comics
For Zack Snyder, It’s much more interesting to present a version of Batman where he has no choice but to kill, as in the comics “The Dark Knight Returns” by Frank Miller, a cult story of the character that shows a very dark vision of the superhero. What interests the director is Break this divine status of the character to see him in a new light. However, he understands this relationship between almost religious fans and superheroes because he identifies with them himself:
For many people it is a lifestyle choice. It’s not like I’m doing a romantic comedy. People who love (comic book movies)… I love that they feel that passion. I wouldn’t criticize her in any way because I feel the same way. For them, it’s not just a movie. We must therefore realize that it is their religion and is close to their hearts. It is also my religion.
In any case, we’re not sure if we’ll see Zack Snyder producing a DC Comics film again anytime soon, as the cinematic universe has been completely taken over by Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, who will do it The implementation of “Superman Legacy” is planned for summer 2025.
