Kyoto Animationan industry-defining animation studio, will release a film next year featuring daily.

It’s been a while since Kyoto Animation has released a brand new series, as all it has produced following the arson attack in 2019 have been follow-ups to earlier series, such as Sound! Euphonium. But over the weekend, the animation studio announced that its next series will be based on the City Created by Keiichi Arai, his most famous work is probably Nichijou, which is considered to belong to the same universe. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Kyoto Animation also produced the animation of Nichijou, and if you are a big fan of Kyoto Animation, you will know that it is one of the best animations ever made.

You can check out the trailer for The City above, which doesn’t feature any animation, but it has a really fun vibe from the get-go regardless. The video’s description (kind of) explains the story: “This town, isn’t just any ordinary town. There’s laughter, love, and emotional moments. The residents lead unpredictable, ordinary lives! Exciting things happen one after another. Welcome to The City.” In more detail, much like Everyday Life, The City is a slice-of-life series that focuses on the daily lives of three college students and the other residents of the eponymous city (although it’s a little more surreal than that).

Taichi Ishidate will direct the series, having directed several Kyoto Animation projects over the years. The cast also looks strong, with the three main characters voiced by Mikako Komatsu (Jujutsu Kaisen), Aki Toyosaki (K-ON!), and Yui Ishikawa (NieR: Automata).

There’s no firm release date yet, except that it’s expected to be sometime in 2025, so you’ll want to keep an eye out.
