Doom Eternal's id Tech 7 is one of the most powerful assets in the game.
At this point, it has been well established that subsequent iterations of id Software's id Tech engine are some optimizations. Doom 2016 and Eternal doom Try to run at locked 60fps while providing impressive visuals.
On the PC, things can go even further, and id Software is ready to push them to their limits. How extreme? Well, according to chief engine programmer Billy Kahn, Doom Eternal can run at 1,000fps if even a sufficiently powerful PC can do it.
"On id Tech 6, we can reach 250fps. If you have the hardware, this game can reach 1,000fps." Kahn told IGN.
Broadly speaking, Kahn talked about the latest upgrade of the current version of ID Tech over Doom 2016. Eternal managed to push more particles on the screen while maintaining a smooth frame rate. Kahn said id Tech 7's CPU usage is now much better, which allows the engine to use all CPU cores more efficiently.
This not only applies to mid-generation upgrades such as PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, but it also helps bring support for PS5 and Xbox Series X, although Kahn is unable to share details in this regard.
Doom Eternal (Battle Pass is available for free) will launch on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on March 20. Looking for more? Be sure to check out our Doom Eternity preview, where we will explore how id Software has revolutionized Doom Eternal gameplay.
