The Netflix original Daredevil was packed with violence, but it sounds like Marvel is upping the ante for the upcoming Disney Plus series.
A big part of the appeal of Netflix’s Daredevil was the action and violence, especially since it attempted to be more grounded than much of what the Marvel Cinematic Universe was offering at the time. Marvel Studios was trying to appeal to a wider audience, so Daredevil and Netflix’s other Marvel shows tried to be their edgier cousins. But in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the head of streaming, television, and animation at Marvel Studios tried to make it clear that Daredevil: Rebirth would be a pretty “brutal” movie.

“I’m telling you, Daredevil: Rebirth is some of the most brutal action we’ve ever put on screen,” Winderbaum said. “It’s not a horror movie, but it’s really powerful and there’s a lot of outrageous action to say the least.” This is obviously a reference to the wider discussion surrounding the upcoming MCU Disney Plus series Agatha Christie’s Chronicles, which focuses on horror in the cinematic universe.
“I think it has to do with the filmmaker’s intent,” Windbaum explained. “The horror in Agatha is different from the horror in Marvel Zombies. It’s different from the horror in Blade. It’s different from the horror in Moon Knight. It really depends on how the filmmaker takes the horror cue. This is not unique to horror films. This is unique to any genre that we attempt. Obviously, there are many ways to tell a story.”
Windbaum also briefly touched on the Nova series currently in development and its inspirations in a separate interview earlier this week.
