Modding has been an important part of computer gaming since ancient times. Now, the gaming modding world may be about to undergo one of its biggest changes ever, with Nvidia’s RTX Remix technology set to enter public beta later this month.

RTX Remix provides a set of tools that allow players to recreate any classic game they want, and the game will enter a full public beta on January 22nd. At that point, anyone with a compatible GeForce RTX graphics card will be able to download the tool and try to recreate it themselves.
While Remix is not a simple “point-and-shoot” solution, its goal is to create visual overhaul mods for classic PC games from many different eras. At a basic level, RTX Remix can be used to add “RTX features” like ray tracing to older games – but beyond that, it also simplifies the process of more important, top-down remaster-style mods.
Nvidia is demonstrating this technology with the release of Portal with RTX, a stunning visual makeover of Valve’s first-person puzzle classic created using a beta version of the RTX Remix tool.
Nvidia follows up Portal with Half-Life 2 RTX, a thorough and stunning remake of an old game developed with RTX Remix handpicked by a group of community members who had early access to the tool. Another tech demo from Nvidia showed off footage from The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind reimagined in Remix.
Remix requires a lot of knowledge to actually use, but that doesn’t stop it from impressively streamlining the process through a combination of AI and other RTX GPU proprietary technologies. Currently, it’s not compatible with everything, and is limited to 3D games running on certain versions of DirectX – but if the tool is successful, its compatibility could expand.
Through January 22, anyone with the necessary PC hardware can participate and start creating.
Nvidia has good reason for doing all this, too: modding is a big market. When RTX Remix was released, the company estimated that more than 10 million people classified themselves as “modders”, creating modded content – and that more than 7 billion game mods were downloaded every year. With Remix, we’ll likely see this number grow.
