Surprise, surprise. Rebecca’s Game of the Year is Baldur’s Gate 3, and can we blame her? Not at all, especially considering that most people agreed with her when Baldur’s Gate 3 won the GOTY award at The Game Awards.
Despite what our other GOTY videos might lead you to believe, it’s almost impossible for the rest of us at iGamesNews to disagree with her. After Baldur’s Gate 3 launched, much of the team was in a bind – mostly because we had to come up with a ton of guides – but also because the game is so awesome, as Rebecca says in the video below as explained in .
There is so much to discover, so much to do, and so many dice to roll that will determine your fate. While it will undoubtedly be overwhelming for new players to the series and those who have never played Dungeons & Dragons, the game has managed to win the hearts of people from all walks of life, going some way to transforming new players into One generation introduced Dungeons and Dragons.
There are also some deep, romantic couples that have definitely taken the world by storm. Not only are their stories deeply touching and relatable, shedding light on real, sensitive issues for any player who dares to develop a relationship with these characters, but boy are they funny, too.
You can bet that gaming’s most unlikely baby girl, Astario, was Rebecca’s first choice out of the crowd. Again, we can’t blame her. In a surprise move, Neil Newbon won Best Performance by an Actor for his performance as Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3, with many praising the entire cast.
It’s amazing how different things could have been. The stars of Larian Studios align in many ways: BG3 was part of Dungeons & Dragons’ overall mainstream push, with the new cinematic universe launching the same year as the cRPG renaissance. An infamous clash between some of Microsoft’s strict policies and Larian’s inability to run key features of the game on the Xbox Series S ultimately led to Sony gaining exclusivity on the console without even sending a single email . The release of BG3 Season 1. And, with it being released so close to the release of flagship Xbox RPG Starfield, a narrative has emerged that this is essentially a clash of platform holders, rather than just two big games releasing close to each other.
One might suspect that a large segment of the PlayStation audience that had previously had no idea or interest in the game suddenly found themselves invested in its success. One might also suspect that the resulting staggered releases might not hurt the game’s long-term relevance either. Of course, none of this would matter if BG3 wasn’t, in fact, a great game made by a famous master.
Before they became the custodians of the D&D license, they were working on the Divinity series, which we’re assured by the various neckbeards on staff, was pretty good. BG3 is both the spiritual sequel to “Divinity: Original Sin 2” and the actual sequel to “Baldur’s Gate 2”. So while the hand of fate seems to be in Larian’s favor this year, we shouldn’t do it for one second. It goes to show that the fact that we’re sitting here talking about this in such glowing terms isn’t primarily about Larian’s talent.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is an RPG masterpiece that has already earned its place among the legends of the genre, including its predecessors. The acting is beautiful, the story is great, and no matter how you slice it, it’s become the beautiful, intoxicating piece of video game magic we all need. If you haven’t played it yet, don’t let the hundreds of hours of gameplay put you off; you’ll enjoy every little moment. You may never finish it, but that’s okay. As the old saying goes, most D&D campaigns aren’t over yet: they’ve been abandoned.
