For better or worse, 2023 is the year. One of its advantages is Cosmic Wheel Sisterhoodthis only A great game released in August. Ahem.
Like the other story-driven masterpieces I’ve sneakily mentioned (Baldur’s Gate 3, just in case you’re reading this before 8am) Cosmic’s main appeal is that it feels It feels wonderful and defined, like something it was made for. Humans, by humans. Over the years, this has become a signature of Spanish indie studio Deconstructeam, whose work truly captures the emotions that drive our real-world lives and calm interactions. In the second episode of our 2023 gaming series below, I argue that this human element separates all of this year’s most popular games from all the usual cash grabs and live service missteps:

2018’s The Red String Club is a great example of how to leverage a compelling narrative, interesting characters, and lots of alcohol – CWS builds on the same style of narrative experience, albeit with the alcohol swapped out for towers Luo cards. It has all the choices and consequences you’d expect from an RPG, as well as in-depth world-building, and doesn’t suffer from the lack of any shooting or stabbing between dialogue sections.
In these conversational sections you will find a unique and credible group of people who are a pleasure to get to know. No matter what your interests are or what kind of personality you have, I bet at least one witch or entity squirms when Fortuna, the game’s protagonist, arrives at her cabin on the asteroid. Come into your heart. As with all of Deconstructeam’s work, the acting is handled very well, and the dialogue is full of funny laughs and emotionally resonant lines that fit together almost perfectly.
You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and if you’re lucky, you’ll become some kind of weird god by winning an intergalactic election. Simple GOTY.
