Reality is often more tragic than the worst fiction and the franchise we are going to talk about is the perfect example. The first film in the saga was marked by the death of its leading actor on set. 21 years later, a reboot aims to bring this hero back to life, led by an actor who faced Keanu Reeves in John Wick: Chapter 4.

A tragic saga full of tragedies

On March 31, 1993, on the set of the film The Crow, directed by Alex Proyas (Dark City, I, Robot), a gun prematurely ended the career and life of Bruce Lee’s son. Actor Brandon Lee dies on the set of this fantastic film. Despite the tragedy, this adaptation of the comic book of the same name was released a year later and managed to convince audiences to go to the cinema. With a budget of $23 million, The Crow does not cross the symbolic threshold of $100 million, but it is close to it ($94 million).

After the sequel City of Angels with Frenchman Vincent Pérez in the title role and an outstanding series with Mark Dacascos in the role of the avenging Raven, the franchise quickly fell into oblivion. Salvation and Wicked Prayer were released directly in physical form and were unanimously rejected by critics and fans of the character. As a reminder, “The Crow” is originally a series of supernatural comic books written and illustrated by James O’Barr. It was launched in 1989 and is still relevant in 2024 with more than 45 “chapters”.

The Raven returns to cinemas in 2024

Alex Proyas’ adaptation of The Crow had something sticky and surreal about it, reminiscent of Tim Burton’s Gotham. Rupert Sanders, a director who made a name for himself with “Ghost in the Shell” and the Apple TV+ series “Foundation,” offers comic fans a more urban, down-to-earth version in 2024. And he can count on an actor who faced Keanu Reeves’ John Wick in Chapter 4 of the saga to bring that vision to life. Little anecdote: Filmmaker Chad Stahleski replaced Brandon Lee on the set of the first film in 1993 to complete it.

Bill Skarsgård, who has recently been seen in several action films, plays Eric Draven aka The Crow. In fact, The actor has a compelling resume between his confrontation with Baba Yaga (even if he stays far from physical abuse) and the trashy and 100% pulp nugget “Boy Kills World,” released in the U.S. in April 2024. He shows a certain fighting spirit. Alongside him, The Crow (2024) stars FKA Twigs, Danny Huston, Laura Birn and the French-Tunisian actor Sami Bouajila.

The reboot of The Crow will be released in French cinemas on August 21st.

The summary of the movie The Crow: Eric and Shelly, two soulmates, are brutally murdered when demons from the latter’s dark past catch up with them. With the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to exact ruthless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to right the wrongs committed. -Lionsgate film
