There are video games that you always come back to. No matter what happens or how much you are disappointed, you always come back. Whether out of commitment, habit or nostalgia, install it again to continue your adventure. It happens especially with games that are a few years old, such as The Division 2 and Destiny 2 in my case. Not much on Ubisoft’s part, but Bungie is another story.
I want to be honest. Echoes did not live up to what I expected after The Final Form. It was far from being fun, even though it introduced several interesting weapons. Act III in particular was repetitive, heavy and soporific in general terms. It was based on repeating the same Exotic Mission up to three times for weeks and doing some farming tasks.
I ended up very disenchanted with Bungie. I understand that seasonal content is not comparable to an expansion, but it should at least be fun and varied. And let it be known that I am not asking for miracles either. I remember that I have always defended Eclipse tooth and nail, despite it being an expansion that could have been much better.
Resurgence: Act 1 of Destiny 2, the origin of the change?
Bungie took advantage of the celebration of the tenth anniversary of Destiny 2 with many promises of content, but the most important was regarding change. They have realized that it is not enough to do business as usual: “We believe it is time for Destiny to change and evolve, and our community also wants this game to grow and innovate,” they said in the statement. And that means “breaking some molds.” This announcement inspired confidence in me and it will be very exciting if they manage to pull it off.
I think Act 1 of Resurgence has hints of these changes. Although it is a little far from the “zero hour” of change (2025), I am convinced that I can interpret it as a teaser of what is to come. The contrast with Act 1 of Echoes is evident. I don’t want to go into commenting on all the changes because the list is very extensive and I still have some things to understand, but I do want to convey the impressions I had at the end of this first part.
For me, the most important thing Destiny 2 It’s the story. I wouldn’t play if I didn’t have it, so much so that I stop playing when there are no new story missions. Ecos was the perfect excuse to continue play ing after The Final Form
Act 1 of Resurgence is another story. The story is interesting, it is carefully curated with several very cool cinematics and presents substantial changes in every way. Without going into too many spoilers: they crash the damn CLME and give us a new area in the Commercial District of the Last City, at the foot of the Tower! Overall, I feel like Bungie has put a lot more care into this start.
Another reason why I really liked Act 1 of Resurgence is that old acquaintances return, but for real: Eramis and Fikrul, the Zealot. They are two characters with whom you should not fool around. Eramis already gave us ours in Beyond the Light and Fikrul is the leader of the Forsaken… and was one of Aldren Sov’s men who participated in the death of Cayde-6 in The Forsaken.
I admit that I finished Act 1 with a lump in my throat. I don’t want to go into spoilers, as I mentioned, but Fikrul was not very happy that Aldren Sov is dead and that his name is now Crow. It’s not “The Fanatic” for nothing. Therefore, the story revolves around the Fallen. I’m not passionate about them, but I am more interested in them than the Vex.
The story is only part of everything I liked. Another important one that has won me over is a new potion-making system with unique benefits. They are called Balms and allow you to obtain specific rewards for a certain time. You have to collect the ingredients to make them and they have their own contracts. It is something similar to Christmas cakes. It has its intricacies. It does not guarantee you anything in particular, but it does allow you to focus the search on a type of equipment.
I think the events of Act 1 of Resurgence are substantial and impactful while also taking their time to get going. Cinematics, dialogues, tutorials and some initial missions for the Balms and story missions in coherent locations and not recycling Lost Sectors that more or less fit what happens. Even so, everything indicates that the weekly structure of Resurgence will be similar to what was seen in Acts I, II and III of Echoes. I hope it is at least more varied and exciting.
Maybe it’s just my impression, but I think Resurgence will be better than Echoes and it could be a sign that Bungie’s new direction for 2025 will be positive for Destiny 2. Even so, the studio still has a debt to pay and that I do not intend to forget: where are the Red War, The Curse of Osiris, The Strategist and The Forsaken campaigns?
