After the success of House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones universe could be expanded to the cinema. A film is currently in development, although the project is still in its early stages.
Many projects for GoT
We already knew that there are many projects underway surrounding the Game of Thrones universe. In addition to the now well-known spin-off House of the Dragonfurther series are in preparation, such as: A knight of the Seven Kingdomswhich attracts particular attention. Set 90 years before the events of GoT, the series follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Aegon Targaryen, the future King Aegon V. This series focuses less on large-scale battles and promises a more intimate approach to the Targaryen universe. It will join other upcoming projects such as: 10,000 shipswhich traces the story of Princess Nymeria, and Aegon the Conqueror, The focus is on the rise of King Aegon I. What we didn’t know, however, is that a film is also in the works.
A spin-off and soon a film
At a recent press conference Casey Bloys, The HBO and Max director confirmed that the studio is considering a feature film based on the famous saga, with Martin himself involved in the creative process. Although the project is still in its early stages and there is no director or actor in place yet, the idea of a film set in the Westeros universe seems increasingly likely, even if expectations remain cautious. It should be noted that this project is “only” in development.
“You come up with this idea and we’ll see if it’s any good. We will read the scripts with them. I think it could be fun and interesting. This Game of Thrones film project would mark a strategic turning point for HBO, which has long favored television series. If the idea of turning the series into a feature film had even been considered in 2014, HBO would have always resisted it. However, with the success of franchises like The Batman and Dunewhose universe has expanded to include television, the line between cinema and series now seems more fluid. It remains to be seen whether this project will come to fruition, perhaps as an original production for HBO Maxor even better, in the cinema.
