In Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, an infamous mobile technology is back and better than ever

With the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, a lot of time has been spent working on the new movement system. It makes sense, omnidirectional movement is a major addition to the game and it provides a lot of skill expression, not to mention it’s fun. But with all the good comes a bad side, and it looks like an infamous piece of sports technology is back and better than ever.

This technique is snake walking. Snaking is the act of quickly switching between crouched and prone positions behind cover, allowing you to gain vision from behind cover without exposing yourself to a hail of bullets. It’s already been powerful in previous Call of Duty games, but given the added mobility of all-round movement, you can swing at incredible speeds while snaking.

You can see the technology in action below, courtesy of user The Rotation on Twitter. They posted a brief clip of the gameplay, showing a 1:1 scoreline between the two players. The perspective we get is that of the victim, with no other players visible. Meanwhile, as shown in the killcam, players sneaking behind cover have perfect sight of their opponents and can quickly aim and fire after exiting cover.

Snake has proven to be so unsuccessful in the past that it has affected professional play. Back in late 2023, the CDL (Call of Duty League) decided to adopt the technology outright (thanks to esports.net), which was done via a “gentleman’s agreement” since the snaking ban was actually difficult to enforce. Is that player lazy? Or do they just keep moving behind cover? Are they lucky? Did they do it accidentally? This is a difficult decision. Still, it’s free reign in Blops 6 multiplayer matches, so you can abuse it to your heart’s content.
