It was quiet around Silent Hill for a long time and the question arose as to whether it would make sense to continue with the brand without Hideo Kojima. It finally happened two days ago: Konami has a remake Silent Hill 2 announced.
The title is being developed by the horror experts Bloober Team, which among other things is responsible for The Medium and the Layers of Fear series are known. The system requirements have already been published on Steam and they have it all!
The system requirements for Silent Hill 2 Remake
minimum requirements
No joke: According to the developer, the following specs should only be enough for 1080p/30 FPS at low to medium settings:
- Operating system: Windows 10
- Processor: Intel Core i5-8400 / AMD Ryzen 3 3300X
- Memory: 12GB RAM
- Grafik: AMD Radeon RX 5700 / Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080
- Storage space: 50GB
Recommended Requirements
If you’re expecting a big leap in resolution, don’t worry: the recommended specs are for 1080p at 60 fps and medium settings, or 30 fps at high settings!
- Operating system: Windows 11
- Processor: Intel Core i7-8700K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600X
- Memory: 16GB RAM
- Grafik: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT / Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080
- Storage space: 50GB
Once again it is striking that these requirements are only for gaming in FullHD. For higher resolutions, Konami recommends using upscalers such as Nvidia’s DLSS. It’s also worth noting that we’re now in an era where the Geforce GTX 1080, a former flagship, is listed in a game’s minimum requirements.
Bloober Team’s last game, The Medium, was also a performance hog. The horror game with the unique split-screen gameplay was able to bring even an RTX 3080 to its knees with the highest settings and activated ray tracing. It is therefore quite possible that the recommended system requirements for the Silent Hill 2 Remake already include ray tracing.
It is also interesting that the fog, which is omnipresent in the game, was used in the original to save resources. In contrast, volumetric fog, which is used in many games today, requires a decent amount of power. The high requirements may also be partly due to this.
