Aska aims to be more than just the next open-world survival game in the footsteps of Valheim or Conan Exiles, the newly announced game from indie studio Sand Sailor has outright ambitions and challenges you to build an entire society while you explore, fight, fish and craft!
But from the beginning: what is it actually about? In Aska, you take on the role of a Viking chieftain and must ensure your survival in the dangerous fantasy world of Norse mythology. To do this, Aska relies on various gameplay pillars:
- Classic co-op survival: As the so-called winter of death approaches, there are tools to craft, resources to gather, and animals to hunt. This can be done in a team of up to four players. As is often the case in the survival genre, you’ll want to keep your hunger, thirst, and temperature gauges locked in as you craft better and better items or engage in combat.
- Construction strategy: In Aska you don’t build alone, you command NPC troops. The villagers can till fields, construct buildings, open mines and just await your orders! A whole Viking empire, over which you rule, should be able to grow from a small village. Only a strong and autonomous Viking society will survive the winter, the developers warn.
- Shipping & Exploration: The open and procedurally generated world of Aska is intended to provide treasures and hidden loot. As a leader, your job is to build a fully customizable Viking ship and open up new lands for your followers. Supply lines can even be established between settlements and outposts.
To set the mood for the mythical world of Aska, there is this cinematic trailer that reveals a monstrous beast:
