During today’s Nintendo Direct (June 21), viewers watched a lot of Mario content. Not only will we get a Super Mario RPG remake before the end of the year, but we’ll also get to enjoy Mario and some 2D action in the upcoming title. super mario bros marvel exist October 20.
In what felt like a wild dream in the trailer shown at the Nintendo Direct, we got a glimpse of what’s to come. The new game borrows heavily from New Super Mario Bros., which first came out on the Nintendo DS in 2006, but there are plenty of new elements to discover.
First and foremost, Mario has access to new abilities! The standout scene from the Nintendo Direct saw Mario eat a strange fruit and transform into an elephant. If he’s capable of that, goodness knows what else we’ll see him turn into in The Marvel of Super Mario Bros. I suspect we’ll see him turn into a car like Kirby from Kirby and the Forgotten Lands, but who knows?
In addition to the new power-ups, there are magic flowers. Every time Mario interacts with the Magic Flower, Mario unlocks the wonders of his world, changing the gameplay. In the trailer, we see that touching magical flowers can activate pipes, causing them to function like caterpillars, among other miracles that cause the world to go dark, or summon herds of bulls.
Super Mario Bros. Marvel doesn’t need to be enjoyed alone either, as four-player co-op is supported. When entering a multiplayer game, players can choose from classic characters such as Mario, Luigi, Toad, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, and Yoshi. I’ll take Yoshi, thanks!
Last but not least, there are new animations for most of Mario’s moves, and there’s clearly a lot of attention to detail here. For example, look at the way Mario’s hat falls when he enters the pipe, and he grabs it quickly. Such details already impress me, and I am very eager to get into the game. God knows how much time I spent as a kid working on New Super Mario Bros. with my dad, so I can’t wait to see what he does!
