“Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny” has started in German cinemas. It is the finale of the Indiana Jones film series. We explain the end of “Indy 5” to you!
Harrison Ford is back – in fedora and leather jacket! With “Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny” we can expect the grand finale of the “Indiana Jones” film series. It is now the fifth installment in the series and Harrison Ford’s farewell as Grandpa Indy. He is joined by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”) as Indy’s goddaughter Helena and Mads Mikkelsen as the villain Voller.
The film follows Indy as he struggles to get hold of the Wheel of Destiny before it falls into Voller’s hands. While Indy doesn’t believe time travel is possible, he doesn’t want to risk having the Nazi, Voller, rewrite history.
As the title of this article suggests, we’re going to cover the ending of the film. So be hereby again spoilers
Indiana Jones 5: What happened in the end?
Indy has a rough start in film. He’s old, he wants to retire, and he can’t even trust his goddaughter, Helena (Waller-Bridge). She wants the Wheel of Destiny to sell on the black market, while the Nazi Voller (Mikkelsen) is hunting the artifact.
Voller is a Nazi who was able to infiltrate NASA as a scientist after World War II. With the help of the wheel of time, he wants to travel back in time and prevent the fall of the Third Reich. A hunt ensues, in which Indy and Helena have to work together.
While she mostly dismisses Indy as an old man who doesn’t have much to offer anymore, Indy can always surprise her and himself by having a few tricks up his sleeve. But it’s all useless and in the end Voller gets to the wheel of time and wants to undertake a journey through time.
However, he neglected some parameters when calculating the leap in time and so Voller, Indy, Helena and Co. do not end up in Nazi Germany, but in antiquity. There, a battle rages that kills the Nazis while Indy meets the eminent physicist and mathematician Archimedes, who developed the Wheel of Destiny.
Badly wounded, Indy actually wants to stay in the 3rd century, but Helena can’t tolerate that and hits him. Indy falls unconscious and eventually wakes up at his house. Helena took him back to the 1960s again. In his apartment there is a touching moment with Marion (Karen Allen).
This happened between Indy and Marion!
Marion only appears at the end of Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny. She and Indy were married at the end of the fourth film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and were separated by the time of Indiana Jones 5. The reason for this is the death of their son, Mutt (Shia LaBoeuf).
They couldn’t handle death and comfort each other, so Marion left Indy. But in the end, the two can pull themselves together again and know that they can always count on each other.
After Indiana Jones 4: That’s why Mutt isn’t in “The Wheel of Destiny”
Mutt was one of the new roles in “Indiana Jones 4”. However, fans weren’t too fond of Indy and Marion’s son, and actor Shia LaBoeuf has also had some controversy in recent years. So it was obvious that Lucasfilm didn’t want to bring the role back.
In the film itself, Mutt’s absence is justified by the death of the role. Mutt volunteered to fight in the Vietnam War and died there.
Which “Indiana Jones” movies do we know Sallah from?
Once at the beginning and then again at the end, John Rhys-Davies is seen as Indy’s longtime friend Sallah. We know this character from the very first film “Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark” and the third film “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”. Rhys-Davies also plays the role in the films.
Indiana Jones 5: Was That Really The Finale?
Has Helena been introduced as Indy’s successor? Will there be a sixth Indiana Jones movie? Will Harrison Ford appear in the Disney+ series set in the Indiana Jones universe? We can answer all of these questions with “no”. However, we have to answer “yes” as to whether “Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny” is the finale.
For Harrison Ford, the journey as Indiana Jones is over. The actor hangs up his whip, leather jacket and fedora. He also doesn’t want to return to guest roles in spin-offs ever again. How it looks with Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Helena is still unclear.
She may not appear in the upcoming Disney+ series, but that doesn’t mean the character won’t appear in other future projects. However, we can rule out the possibility that she will take on the leading role in another “Indiana Jones” film.
So “Indiana Jones 5” is really the finale of the film series. Another part will not appear and with Harrison Ford leaving the role, we also have to say goodbye to Indiana Jones.
