With an M.2 SSD you can expand the storage of your PS5. We explain how you install an SSD in your PlayStation 5 and what you have to consider.
The PS5 only offers 667 gigabytes of available storage space. Of course it fills up quickly. Sony has therefore installed a second SSD slot in the console and after a firmware update you can now use it to expand the memory.
You first need an M.2 SSD with heat sink, we list compatible models separately for you. Then you can easily install the memory expansion.
If you own or want to buy a compatible NVMe SSD without a heatsink like the Kioxia Exceria Pro NVMe SSD, we recommend that you use an external heatsink. However, the PS5 has a maximum installation size. Here you have to stick to Sony’s specifications, otherwise you run the risk that the memory bar will not fit into the holder. In the table below you will find the requirements for an SSD including the maximum installation size with heat sink.

Sony PS5 – SSD requirements
Open prepare and console
Turn off your console and wait a bit for it to cool down. Disconnect all cables from the PlayStation 5 and place them sideways on a flat, clean work surface.
How to put an SSD in the PS5
Follow these steps when installing the SSD.
Lay them out facing you, with the PlayStation logo facing down. Now lift the upper left corner of the side shell with a little force with your left hand and pull the side shell to the right almost simultaneously with your right hand. This is how you open the console.
Remove screws
You can now see the cover of the SSD slot near the fan. Open it with a Phillips screwdriver. Set the screw and cover neatly aside.
You discover another screw in the slot. Also remove this and the spacer underneath.
Install SSD
Now position the spacer in the frame that corresponds to your SSD size. Now hold your SSD on the side and insert it into the intended connection. Make sure it’s properly seated. Now press the SSD down a bit so that you can attach the SSD flush to the spacer with a screw.
Now you screw on the cover of the SSD again, then the side shell of the PS5. You have now installed the SSD.
