To everyone’s surprise, Intel will release an unexpected patch this week, targeting a wide range of its modern processors.
If a massive security breach affected all current Intel processors, you would want to know, right? Oh, intel has not disclosed the reason for a recent microcode upd ate for almost all of its processors.
This update was released on Friday May 12th. Spotted by a certain “Phoronix” who notes that Intel hasn’t mentioned anything about the probable cause of this update during “Patch Tuesday” when the company generally releases its security announcements. The only explanation given is that it is ” Security Updates for (INTEL-SA-NA) which simply means that it is a problem with no safety notice.
False alarm, Intel is fine
So why all the fuss? To be honest, we don’t know, although Intel has informed users that the “microcode” update does not introduce security updates. While we still don’t know what this patch actually fixes, the manufacturer’s response is reassuring. The Spirit of Heroics”meltdown
Anyway, this mysterious patch from last week is already applied by Linux users as well as Windows and Mac users as part of their security updates.
Which CPUs are affected by this patch from Intel?
According to PCWorld, the patch release posted on the GitHub page lists processors from 2017 to the current 13th generation. In other words, if you have a relatively new PC with an Intel processor, the company deems it necessary to patch your system.
It is unknown if Intel has decided not to patch older processors or if they are unaffected. Note that Windows 11 does not support processors earlier than 8th generation, which may partially explain the reason for this change.
