Apple will introduce new features with iOS 18.2. However, one function is only available if you are under 13 years old.
It is important that children are protected from inappropriate content online. However, it is difficult to limit what content is sent privately to the youngest. Private messages are particularly difficult to restrict. What kind of photos and videos the little ones receive depends on the sender. It could also be content that is inappropriate for children. With the new iOS 18.2 update, children, initially in Australia, will have the option to report senders directly via iMessage.
The Apple fan blog Macrumors explains
Children will soon be able to report inappropriate content
This security setting is an extension of communication security for children. If the mode is activated, children will be warned if someone tries to send them photos and videos that contain nudity. Even if you try to send such content yourself, a warning appears. In addition to iMassage, the feature also applies to AirDrop content, FaceTime video messages and contact posters in the Phone app.
The reason for the expansion of the function is a new law in Australia. The country wants large tech companies like Apple to take on more responsibility. By the end of 2024, technology companies in Australia will be required to take stricter measures to combat abusive material on their platforms. In the future, Apple would also like to make the new function available globally.
