Marvel superheroes are all the rage in the video game rumor mill right now. In addition to vampire hunter Blade, the focus is above all on Avenger Iron Man.
Ubisoft yesterday denied rumors about work on a video game about the Marvel superhero Blade, but speculation about a new game with Iron Man from Electronic Arts is still stubborn. It seems that the famous Avenger could almost have been shipped into its own video game by another well-known developer.
As it turns out, the developers at Avalanche Studios, known for the Just Cause series, had recently also worked on an Iron Man game. This had been in the works for a whopping two years before it was finally scrapped. Chris tofer Sundberg, the co-founder of the studio himself, confirmed this FromMax
Accordingly, Disney and Mavel approached the studio to give the superhero its own video game. The negotiations were quickly brought to a conclusion and in the same year the development work on the Iron Man title began. But Disney then wanted to shave a full year off development time – and that’s not necessarily the norm in an industry known for postponements and delays.
A shorter development time is therefore also associated with a larger necessary budget, after all the studio would have had to hire 70 to 80 new employees to finish the game within the deadline. According to Sundberg, all the circumstances in this context would have ruined the studio if Disney’s terms had been agreed to. That’s why it ended up being discontinued.
Incidentally, Sundberg – unsurprisingly – owed no concrete details about the discontinued Iron Man game. After all: As far as the game is concerned, he drew a comparison to Warner’s Batman Arkham series, so you should probably have expected an open game world and action-packed gameplay.
Disney, however, seems – as mentioned at the beginning – to have now turned to EA. An Iron Man title is said to be in the works there, although this has not yet been officially confirmed.
