Don’t worry, James Cameron fans, the director still plans to direct the fourth and fifth Avatar movies, and there’s nothing that can stop him.
After more than a decade of waiting, Avatar: The Way of Water is finally here, making the third, fourth, and fifth movies possible instead of just years of “yeah, they’ll definitely happen.” Last weekend, Avatar 3 also finally got the subtitle, Fire and Ashes, and we know Cameron is directing that movie since he’s filming it concurrently with the second movie. Fire and Ashes is currently set to be released next year on December 19, 2025, but Cameron has two more movies planned after that one as well. The director has previously said that he thinks he’ll be passing the directing baton to someone else, unsure if it will be after the third or fourth movie, but in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron made it clear that he intends to direct through at least the fifth movie.

When asked if he planned to direct Avatar 4 and 5, Cameron said, “Of course. Absolutely. I mean, they’d have to stop me. I’ve got so much energy and I love what I’m doing. Why wouldn’t I? Both of those movies, by the way, have been written. I just reread both of them a month ago. They’re both fantastic stories. They’ve got to be made. Look, if I got hit by a bus and I had an iron lung put on, somebody else would do it.” Understandably, the interviewer noted that they hoped that wouldn’t happen, and Cameron joked that he tries to “avoid that.”
Cameron has previously stated that he plans to shoot the sixth and seventh “Avatar” films, but he also said that the directors of these two films are likely to be other people.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron also revealed that he is working on something new for the Terminator universe, but when asked for more information, he said: “It’s completely confidential. I don’t want to send out a potentially dangerous robot agent, even after the fact.”
