Slowly but surely, information and rumors about Nvidia’s mid-range graphics cards from the Ada Lovelace generation are piling up.
The announcement of the Geforce RTX 4070 is next on the agenda, but there are already a few bits of information about the slightly weaker RTX 4060 Ti. The latest of these give us a first indication of what performance to expect.
Clock frequencies provide information about teraflops
T4C Fantasy from TechPowerUp already wants to know how high the base and boost clock frequency of the Geforce RTX 4060 Ti will be. So the values look like this:
- Base Clock Speed: 2.310 MHz
- Boost Clock Frequency: 2.535 MHz
- Board partners premium cards: Up to 2685MHz
If this data is correct, the RTX 4060 Ti has the same base clock frequency as the RTX 4070 Ti, but with a 75 MHz lower boost.
Based on the clock frequency and the number of shader cores, you can calculate how many teraflops the RTX 4060 Ti will have. This is a unit of measure for the theoretical computing power of graphics cards.
The value of the RTX 4060 would increase based on these rumors 22.1 teraflops. This is how it compares to the other RTX 4000 graphics cards and the current consoles:
Shader Core | (Boost) clock rate | Teraflops | |
---|---|---|---|
Geforce RTX 4090 | 16.384 | 2.520 MHz | 82,6 |
Geforce RTX 4080 | 9.728 | 2.508 MHz | 48,8 |
Geforce RTX 4070 Ti | 7.680 | 2.610 MHz | 40,1 |
Geforce RTX 4070 | 5.888 | 2.475 MHz | 29,1 |
Geforce RTX 4060 Ti | 4.352 | 2.535 MHz | 22,1 |
Playstation 5 | 2.304 | 2.233 MHz | 10,3 |
Xbox Series X | 3.328 | 1.825 MHz | 12,1 |
Xbox Series S | 1.280 | 1.565 MHz | 4 |
Teraflops are not equal to teraflops
The amount of teraflops indicates how many floating point operations can be performed per second. Simply put, the higher the number, the higher the GPU’s raw performance.
Since the boost clock rate is used for the calculation, the number of teraflops may be higher for some board partners, as they are often overclocked.
Now one could quickly assume that the RTX 4060 Ti is about twice as powerful as the Playstation 5 – but this calculation doesn’t look that simple.
It should be noted that teraflops alone are not enough to determine the real performance in applications and games. How many FPS you can achieve in a game or how good it can look depends on other factors such as memory bandwidth, memory size, architecture, drivers and the rest of the hardware.
With consoles, all components are matched to one another, which is why better performance values can also be achieved with lower teraflop numbers. A direct comparison is also not possible in this case because the current consoles use hardware from AMD and not from Nvidia.
