Can the series “The Last of Us,” available on HBO Max, continue after the events of the second game? Showrunner Craig Mazin gives an answer.
The second season of The Last of Us is taking shape and has recently made some revelations. There will be fewer episodes, seven instead of nine, but the duration of some of them could be longer. In any case, the focus is not on quantity or length, but on quality. Pedro Pascal (Joel), Bella Ramsey (Ellie) will be back and will cross paths with actor Jeffrey Wright (Isaac Dixon) and actress Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice 2) in an unknown role. A season 2 that has a lot to tell but also doesn’t want to do too much.
Is the end of The Last of Us series already in the creator’s mind?
Season 2 of The Last of Us series is likely to be just as dense as the game it is based on. “The story we have, The Last of Us 2, is much bigger than the first game. So we had to first figure out how to tell that story across seasons. In doing that, you have to look for natural stopping points. And here, the end point seemed to us to be after seven episodes.”
The story and events of The Last of Us 2 are so rich that the creator and Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann have already warned that not everything will be told right away. It will take a season 3 or even a season 4 to cover everything in a way that does justice to the source material. After that? In the absence of a third game, going beyond four seasons is currently out of the question.
“As a fan, I’m excited that there could be a third The Last of Us game. But as a co-creator of the TV series, there’s no world in which I would want the series to expand beyond the available source material.” (above Deadline). Neil Druckmann added that the two men only focused on the published games, but took the time to properly develop each story arc and character. Despite this closeness to the titles, it was confirmed that there would be stories that were still unpublished, but that made sense in terms of the universe. In addition, the presence of Catherine O’Hara could be an important clue. Some believe that she could embody the Seraphite prophetess who is not planned to be exploited in the sequel.
