The curtain has fallen, Season 2 of Rings of Power has come to an end with the broadcast of episode 8. If you look around on social networks, you notice: The Mood is significantly more positive than at the end of the first season.
Many fans especially praise the finale and the many beautiful scenes in it. Reason enough for us to pick up on this cheerful mood and take a look at our Palantír: Is season 3 coming and if so, what happens in it?
Spoiler warning: If you haven’t seen the Season 2 finale yet, you shouldn’t read any further. Then of course we have to address the events there at one point or another in order to move on to our speculations about season 3.
Season 3 is as sure as Amen in church
No, season 3 of Rings of Power has not yet been officially confirmed. And yes, season 2 recently struggled with dwindling viewership. Nevertheless, some statements made by those responsible only lead to the conclusion that there will definitely be at least a third season.
This is what the two showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne told the in August 2024 Hollywood Reporter:
All we can say is: We are working [an Staffel 3]. We’ll do it. Let’s do it!
Galadriel actress Morfydd Clark also recently chatted with us NME that the journey to Middle-earth is not yet over after season 2:
One day there will be a third season.
Rings of Power was originally designed for five seasons. It can therefore be assumed that Amazon will stick to this plan and only deviate from it in absolute emergencies. An official confirmation of season 3 is probably only a matter of time.

Rings of Power: Amazon lets you take a look behind the scenes of season 2
The war for Middle-earth will probably only really begin in season 3
The obvious question now is what happens in Season 3? How will the storylines of the second season continue and what new plots will be added? Which characters from the Tolkien legend could appear for the first time?
Our Middle-earth correspondent Sören sent us a message via Adler. In it he describes what events he expects for season 3:
Sauron subdues Mordor
In season 2, Sauron was able to successfully disguise himself as Annatar and blend in with the elves. But after the finale, there is probably no better place for him than to finally enter his future kingdom of Mordor. Adar is dead, the orcs now obey him more than ever. Now there is no reason to avoid the former Southlands.
In Mordor he may already be in season 3 Laying the foundation stone for his fortress Barad-dûr. However, it is questionable whether he is already forging the One Ring in Orodruin, Mount Doom. This act will probably only be shown as the grand finale of season 3 at the earliest.
The Ringwraiths are revealed
Far more exciting than the question about the One Ring is what happens to people’s nine rings. We know that they were corrupted by Sauron in the forging process and that the wearers of these rings become the feared Nazgûl (Ringwraiths).
Season 3 could reveal the identities of all nine ring bearers for the first time. This makes it all the more exciting to speculate in the coming season about which characters will later become Sauron’s most feared servants. Are these new characters or have we already seen some of them? Season 3 will most likely answer that question.
Moria will fall through the Balrog
In Season 2, the dwarves of Khazad-dûm used up all the fortune cookies they had stashed somewhere. Moria was ultimately saved twice over the course of the eight episodes: First, the Longbeards managed to repair the mirrors and thereby restore the food supply. And later, King Durin III sacrificed himself in a heroic act to save his people from the awakened Balrog.
