Whenever I’m having a bad day, I follow three rules that work for me when choosing a video game to escape from: no multiplayer, simple tasks, and relaxing music. I can assure a success rate of almost 100%, although obviously you have to be predisposed to playing something cozy or relaxing.
Thus I have discovered jewels that have given me long sessions of peace such as Lake, UnpackingFirewatch and Door Kickers… This last one falls by the wayside because it’s not exactly cozy, but it works for me. I also usually go to No Man’s Sky, although I don’t always get the desired result because I end up becoming obsessed with something and overwhelmed by how absurdly huge the experience is.
Simple tasks and relaxing music, it doesn’t fail
My month of October is not being the best of 2024, so to speak. The return to reading with the book Horus, Lord of War
So I have returned (for a while) to the video game that I consider my official and definitive Fortress of Solitude… at least until further notice. It is on its way to celebrating its decade, it has two sequels and even versions for mobile phones. I’m talking about the wonderful Poly Bridge by Dry Cactus. Neither the second nor the third, but the original and genuine.
Not even Unpacking He managed to transmit as much peace and serenity to me as he has been doing. Poly Bridge (in small moments) over almost a decade. Follow the three rules perfectly, at least if you consider the task of building bridges in a video game easy. For me it certainly is. And the irony that it has been an important pillar of my mental health for days tells itself.
The truth is that Poly Bridge It allows me to activate mental airplane mode, rest my head on my fist (by the cheek) and build bridges just using the mouse with my right hand. You can use the left with some keyboard shortcuts, but nothing that will take up too much of your energy. After all, it is about building bridges using a square or point construction system.
Your only adversaries during the experience are the laws of physics and the budget, although you can take the latter as a mere suggestion. You can get as creative as you want. Although the levels get more complicated as you progress, you will never have an ounce of pressure to finish. Less in the number of attempts! You can watch the cars fall as many times as necessary… and nothing happens. Nobody is going to complain… and much less are there penalties.
I almost always try to make coherent and beautiful constructions, but these days I have played under the law of minimum effort: doing just enough and necessary for the cars to pass from one side to the other. Not one extra piece. Because the intention was that there was no intention, at least not beyond completing the level. Simple tasks. Simple victories. Peace and tranquility.
I’m sure that Poly Bridge It is not the panacea for this disastrous October. Nor do I think it will be the tool that allows me to furnish my mind again. But I am clear that it is a place where I can go to rest and focus my mind on a simple task: making the cars go from one side to the other. And as soon as I publish the analysis of New World: Aeternum, I want to get my hands on Tiny Glade.
